Emily shot her first buck tonight-a big 5x5-she got two 300 grain shockwaves into him before he hit the bush. He went down four times the last 100 yards but we couldn't find him in the dark. Pretty sure he's dead in there but a real jungle-I guess we'll see if we can find him at first light-won't sleep much tonight.

Go Em! I went out early this mornin before church to help my nephew find his first buck. He'd thumped a 2 by 2 last night but ran out'a daylight before finding him. Turned out the buck hooked back over a ridge when hit instead of going downhill with the other deer. One happy 12 year old! His Dad ( my Bro) couldn't be prouder of ol' Tyson! His Uncle is pretty tickled too! Good luck tomorrow! Just think how much fun it will be walking up on him!!!!!! Wish I was closer! :x GOOD LUCK!!!!!! :D

I was using a ball cap with those built in LED lights they work great for tracking-the light goes where your eyes are looking. Hopefully he died quick-sometimes the yotes will push those bucks quite a ways at night. I think the longest track job I've ever had was 8 miles but I walked him to earth-he was hit in the fetlock lol. Did you check out that web album yet Leanin' H.

Tracked him for a couple hours this A'M-talk about welcome to the jungle-my trackers had to go to work and school so I'm on foot for a bit. I'll get on him again in awhile. We saw a booner this A'M-he's next on the agenda after this buck.

Unless he's in a big field of standing barley I'm thinking the wolves pushed him off and killed him. There was a pretty decednt blood trail then just nothing-I found out my little girl can track though-those big whitetails can soak up lead-if that would of been a moose I could of walked up and killed him with a stick.

That sucks. We tracked one in the snow that had been grazed just on the belly. It was 2 days and about 6 miles but we found him. He had ran out of blood and we basically gave up we just followed the biggest deer trail to what I thought was a plowed field ended up being a blacktop highway and he was 200 ft from the edge. His guts were hanging out dragging and no other bullet wounds. My brother is color blind and bowhunts so I get in on alot of tracking when he's hunting.

Ty is colorblind too-doesn't do too bad in the snow but leaves give him pause. Those whitetails are amazing creatures when it come to not dying. I had a two day track job on one that a guy had grazed him and cut his pecker in half-I imagine he welcomed the bullet. Some yotes ran him back to me helped out that day.

Has anyone tried one of those flashlights that are supposed to show up a blood trail easier?...Several different ones on the market....

I used to do a lot of tracking and know the importance of light positioning in cutting sign....The other day when I was at the courthouse the Sheriff and I were talking about some of the old days tracking- and he brought out this flashlight that he said is supposed to help follow bloodtrails in the dark...Said he hadn't had much chance to play with them yet and try them out- but they are supposed to illuminate blood sign... He had got a couple to try out and put in the search and rescue unit...
He said they are about $25 bucks at a sporting goods store... The one he had looked like it emitted a blue or blue/green light...

A simple blue lens cover for your flashlight works about as good as anything.

Those special blood tracking lights are a complete waste of money. Especially the Gerber.

Blacklights are pretty useless too.

The best tracker I know will only use a coleman lantern for blood tracking.
