I just returned from meeting a childhood girlfriend from California in
South Dakota. She still owns her family ranch in Wyoming where my father worked for her family in the 30's. We both spent part of every summer on that ranch. Her aunt and uncle (brother and sister who never married) lived on it and I called them 'aunt' and 'uncle' just as she did.
Some of the best times of my childhood was spent there.
Anyhow, Tuesday, we joined up in SD, where I got hail damage on my car.
As planned, we took in the 1880's Train Ride (wasn't impressive) and went to the Crazy Horse Memorial. After that, we headed for Hot Springs as we had reservations at the Circle B Ranch for their Chuckwagon Dinner and Show.
I'm telling you, it was nothing short of AWESOME!
Dinner starts at 5:30 and the show starts at 6:30 and is over at 7:15 pm.
The food was very tasty and the hosts explained what and why it was
Chuckwagon food. You had your choice of BBQ Beef Brisket, BBQ Chicken or Buffalo; beans; baked potato; homemade applesauce (cuz chuckwagons didn't have salad, so had fruit instead); biscuits, ginger cake and lemonade, water or coffee. They served it on tin plates and cups--as one would expect.
The food was great; the show was AWESOME! We were very impressed.
After the meal the hostess asked who had served or was serving in the military and had those people stand up so they could thank them and give them a round of applause.
There were 6 performers total. 4 men, 2 ladies. They sang Western songs; not country, but
WESTERN and did a bang-up job. They sang songs like Mariah; Cool Water,
Ghost Riders in the Sky; Tumbling Tumbleweed and more. The fiddle player played Orange Blossom Special; they sang America The Beautiful.
The show lasted about 45 minutes and you didn't want it to end. One lady from Colorado played a haunting song on the harmonica. They sang "America the Beautiful" and closed with "Happy Trails to you".
These entertainers were professional, but not un-reachable. They stayed around and visited afterward. It was so casual and friendly. You could tell they dearly loved what they were doing.
Supper and the show cost $25/each and well worth the price. I think if you chose Buffalo as your meat, the price went up to $30. We picked up discount tickets at the KDSJ radio station in Deadwood for $12.50 each.
Those discount tickets are available til Aug 31. So that made the evening a BARGAIN!!!
At 7:30 BRULE held a concert close by and tickets were available for that. We didn't attend as we wanted to get back before it got so late. Cabins are available for overnight rental if desired. It's a beautiful area, 30 miles from Rapid City, 4 miles west of Hill City, SD. BRULE tickets were $28/each,
with $5 off if you presented your ticket from the Circle B.
I feel like we 'discovered' something and wanted to share with others.
So, here's a link to Circle B Ranch Dinner and Show. I hope you go, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

And this time, I plan to take my camera...
