This is the deer i shot this afternoon. She weighed around 105 lbs.

Justin to answer your question. The deer herd in the northern part of the state is alot more than where im at. so they average out for the limits. Not many people i know kill more than 3 a year though.

so do you use them on cattle? how much bite, stamina (although we're a little more "hilly" than you!!) temperment?

That´s probably a typically-sized doe for your area I´d imagine. Did you get her close to home or in the marsh. And speaking of the marsh, if you´ve ever killed any of those deer, how about their feet? They look like skis.

I do recall about 10 or 12 years ago a kid killing a buck up at Thistlewaite Wildlife Management Area (not too far north of RF&R) that had a liveweight of 333 lbs. That´s a sizeable whitetail in anyone´s book.

yanuck, they are actually treeing squirrel dogs for my step dad. Him and mom are out of town, so i am taking care of them. he has used them as hog dogs, deer tracking dogs, and squirrel dogs. Ive used them to work my steers one day but actually i think they are a little too aggressive, but thats because of the hog hunting. But as far as bite you cant ask for a stonger bite. those two can hold down a 200lb hog and let us walk up to them. Then they climb trees to get to coons or squirrels. I will be getting a pup off this next litter and it will be used as a cattle dog. they are very affectionate and loyal.

let me know it works out? Nicky has a neighbor that I think will have what we're looking for and I think he has Cur in his dogs as well as the Catahoula...thanks for the info!

Love that double bib on that buck. Both really nice deer for Louisiana. Who does your taxidermy?

Thats a secret :D. he does it on the side and hes always backed up so he dont put his name out here.

I killed that doe around here. in bayou portage on our lease. yeah i shot a marsh deer last year about a mile from the gulf. she did have some big ol feet but at 3 1/2 years old only weighed about 85 lbs. they just small down there.

Justin. Moms house is an all cypress Acadian Style house that was built after Hurricane Rita took our old one with a live oak tree. One of our barns was knocked down so my dad salvaged alot of the wood to do the inside before he died.

I´ve used Gary Bell down towards Milton. Really pleased with his work though he can be costly. Of course, for something you´re going to look at for the rest of your life, you might as well get it done right.

Congrats again on the hunt.

We´ve actually got some whitetails down here and my guys are reporting seeing more and more of them. There´s lots of poaching down here....they kill anything and everything, including spotted fawns so you can imagine how tough it is for the deer to establish good populations. And all the "hunts" take place at night.

I´m going to talk to my neighbor whose ranch is about the same size as mine and encourage him to help me manage for better deer pops.......no killing does or fawns, planting some of the edges in beans etc. Both of us have plenty of water.

Mr. Gary does all my ducks. he does great work. Yeah if yall can get the management down on those deer you may have a herd to actually hunt and kill some nice deer.

The world only gets smaller, doesn´t it.

As for the deer, as best as I can tell, they´re about the size of our marsh deer back in Louisiana though I have seen some decent looking antlers hanging in a garage or two. Of course, I´ve seen Hill Country deer that would score 140. What whitetails need besides a decent diet, is age.

Will do. The catahoula is an excellent cow dog down here. My friend has some we use that are very aggressive when working and the biggest babies when they come in the house. Ill see if i can round up some pics of these dogs working.

Hey the size dont matter as long as you eatin the meat. As a former coona$$/cajun I know that you would never pass up a good fried backstrap.

Very true. All those bucks that i have are 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 years old. Dad killed a 9 point one year that was 7 1/2 years old.

Speaking of backstrap, have you tried this recipe?

Slice the backstrap in thin strips, season with Tony´s or your favorite. Roll a piece of Philly Cream Cheese and a piece of jalapeno inside the strip, wrap with bacon and secure with a toothpick. Place on the grill for a few minutes on each side.....don´t overcook.

Man o man, that's some good eatin´.

And we´ve actually got Philly Cream Cheese down here! All I need is some backstrap. :?

its gotta be fresh to get the good flavor out of it like that. Try it with duck breasts instead. 10x better

That does indeed sound good. Duck breast (and goose for that matter) is way underrated.

Let it stay underrated. That way more people will chase deer and i can get some more ducks. By the time they get down here its hard to hunt them.

I kind of do that recipe but I put cream cheese and dried cranberries in it then wrap with bacon. I love hunting those old whitetail bucks-they're not easy to trick. Whitewing did you look at the Leanin' H post I put pics on-check out the 'Domi' buck. Some of the biggest bucks you'll se winter on Jackpine moss-we killed a 186 nine year old in camp one time-I bet never say a field in his life.

I´ll check it out NR. I have a lot of respect for whitetails. They can be really dumb sometimes (like during the rut), but the biggest and oldest get that way by being really smart...........hiding in the toughest of cover and becoming totally nocturnal.

I forget the PhD´s name, but this fellow from one of the E. Texas Universities has studied and written some excellent books on whitetailed deer, their management and hunting. I recall reading that he believes some bucks, at about 5 or 6 years of age, quit breeding and become almost impossible to kill by legal means.
