NEW ORLEANS -- For the first 28 minutes of Wednesday night's Sugar Bowl, LSU and Notre Dame traded offensive punches and moved the ball seemingly at will in a 14-14 fight that seemed as if it might last to the 12th round.

For the last 32 minutes of the game, LSU pounded, beat and landed blows to the head and the heart of the Irish that Notre Dame could not return. The Tigers pounded the Irish unmercifully in the second half on their way to a 41-14 drubbing that left little doubt about which team was the fastest, quickest and obviously the most talented.

The Tigers were led by the strong-armed JaMarcus Russell who matched up against Notre Dame quarterback and Heisman Trophy Finalist Brady Quinn, and, frankly, cast a large shadow over the highly-touted Irish signal caller.

Russell completed 21-of-34 passes for 332 yards, two passing and one rushing touchdown and one meaningless interception on his way to being unanimously named the game's Most Outstanding Player. He was replaced by backup Matt Flynn late in the fourth quarter and left the field to a standing ovation from the partisan Superdome crowd.

Quinn ended the game with 15 completions on 35 attempts for 148 yards and two touchdowns to go along with two interceptions after throwing just five interceptions all season.

"I've said it before, I think I have the best quarterback in the country," Miles said.

Russell said he appreciated the accolades he received after the game and the comparisons to Quinn and his abilities but he wanted to spread the credit around to as many Tiger players as possible.

"My main thing is playing for my teammates and my coaches," Russell said. "Everyone has their opinion about who they think is the best and you can't change that. I don't know why I wasn't considered for the Heisman. But, I really do think I'm one of the best in college football."

In all, LSU outgained and stomped the highly regarded Notre Dame offense 577-291 after trailing the Irish in total yardage 261-244 at halftime. The yardage total was the highest of the season for the deep and fast Tiger offense that compiled 31 first downs, 19 of them in the second half. Notre Dame managed 17 first downs.

Most of Notre Dame's first half production came from tailback Darius Walker who gained 125 yards on 18 carries before the break. After halftime, Walker gained three yards while LSU's Keiland Williams gashed the beaten Irish for 94 yards in the second half. In all, the Tigers out-rushed the Irish 245-143.

"When it becomes apparent that the game is going to become a passing game that is when our defense plays real well," Miles said. "Notre Dame got some good yards early in the game on crack back rushes and rushes on the outside. Fixing that was the adjustment made at halftime."

Early in the contest, it looked as if LSU receiver Early Doucet may claim the outstanding player award after catching five passes for 106 yards in the first half. But, Doucet's production tailed off in the second half as Russell spread passes to seniors Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis and also found freshman Brandon LaFell on a 58-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

"I felt like these two teams matched up very well and I thought it was going to be a competitive game," Miles said. "I have great respect for Notre Dame and Coach Weis, but we had a better team today."

For Katrina's Info:

Auburn Beat LSU this year.

Auburn also beat one team playing in the National Championship Game next Monday night. Florida.

Seeing as how Nebraska only got beat by 3 points by Auburn in the Cotton Bowl and played a damn fine game......................

You have nothing to be ashamed of.........................

You still pouting?????????

Notre dame proving once again they don't belong in a BCS game.. Rutgers would have been a better choice but no, ND has that specia clause just for it in the BCS contract.. Auburn would have been a better choice as well. Probably a dozen teams would have been better. No other school gets buy on reputation more than ND..

Did I mention that in bowl season my favorite team is usually the one playing Notre Dame?

It's amazing at all the press given to ND each year. I too, have 3 favorite teams. Auburn, and whoever's playing Bama and ND each week.

Oh god Mike... What if ND plays Bama.... Is that like the apocolypse for you?

It's like my nightmare of a White Sox vs Mets World Series... The problem is that Death is not an option.

I can not stand Notre Lame. they have the sweetest deal in all of NCAA sports. I wish LSU could have hung 100 more on them !!

why do these other conferences allow them to bully their way around??
Rutgers deserved their spot in the bowl....then KSU could have had a shot at another team.....probably the same result, but at least Rutgers DESERVED the BCS bid.

found the following fact this morning....Notre Dame has lost their three BCS bowl games (2001, 2006, 2007) by a combined score of 117-43.

overrated????

Live close enough to South Bend and you will hear about how underrated they are by the fans, how the media has an SEC bias or some other confernce bias. The fact is that if NOtre Dame was in just about any of the BCS conferences tehy wouldn't have nade a bowl any of those bowls. The Big 10? NOt with Ohio State and Michigan around every year and with Wisconsin and Iowa always lurking.. Heck my Wildcats from Northwestern have had years where they sneak up and bite people and than there is PSU. Big East? The old Big east with Miama and such would have been too tough for them and WVU or Louisville would have beat the like a drum the last few years. SEC. Please, ACC... This year maybr but Wake was a better team and the ACC will recover. Big 12...PAC 10... They just woun't be able to get through those conferences..

But tehy will keep playing Army and Navy. Almost loose to Michicgan State. Toss a weak Stanford team in there or maybe Airforce. Tennessee 10 years after they were a power. Purdue.. Come on.. Until they start beating teams that are ranked at the end of the year they have no business talking about how underrated or how much they deserve that excemption for the BCS.. They should have to Qualify the same as the Mountain West and WAC do.. Hey, at least those two conferences won the last time they got a shot.

Oh god Mike... What if ND plays Bama.... Is that like the apocolypse for you?

That would be quite a dilemma.

Kinda like if France went to war with Iran.
We wouldn't know who to help!!!!!

Hasn't ND lost 9 bowl games in a row?

Well if France and Iran went to war you just need to invest in white sheets... Flags for the French and clothing for the Iranians...Oh, Lord, I do apologize...

It is pretty easy for me... I don't think there is a single school ND could be playing against that would make me cheer for them...

this year made it nine straight losses.....

I wish Rutgers went to the BCS bowl, and KSU got Notre Lame..... guess I will just have to sit back and wait till next year, when we beat NU

Northwestern? Nevada? I can't think of any other school beginning with a "N" that you have a chance in beating.

Okay, stupid question but why is University of Nebraska represent with NU instead of UN? No big deal but that has always bugged me as has listing Northwestern University as NWU....

Hey, and leave my mildcats out of Jigs' Mildcats converssation, lol.

Because Nebraska rules!!! :D :D :D  Kick ash NU........

Rules what :???:

Seriously though. I watched the Auburn vs. Nebraska and the LSU vs. ND games very intently and more than once.

Callahan and Weis both had their head buried in the play sheet the entire game. It was like neither watched the game, but were trying to figure out what to do next.

Looks like they both need an Offensive coordinator to call the plays so that can watch the game and actually see what was happening.

Another distinct similarity between ND and NU:

They both called a dumbass fake punt towards the start of the game while backed up deep in their own territory.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. They both should have known that SEC defenses are better than that!
