I know thru the posts, PM's, and phone converstations I've had with some of you on here- many of you know Lynn Cornwell- local rancher who was the President of the NCBA around 2000.....

Today Lynn died of a possible anuerism...I don't know the details- but I was working cattle with his son Kirk north this after noon- and he left about 5 minutes before me (3:30PM)...Apparently he and the hired man must have found him- as I met the ambulance before I got back to town going north (but didn't know what for) .....

He had been in intensive care for a week or two just a month ago from injuries (broken and cracked ribs- bruised internal organs) that he suffered from being bucked off a horse....Don't know if that is connected...

From what I have heard- he died shortly after arrival at the hospital...I think Lynn was 57 years old.... :(

OHHHHHHHHHH, that is so sad. He gave a lot to his organization.

I only kinda knew him. He was Roubie Youkin's brother, wasn't he?

My thoughts are with his family. Tough deal, that one.

Thanks for letting us know, OT.

Roubie was a cousin- she is Tiny Cornwells daughter who died a few years ago.....Lynn was Bill Cornwells (Tiny's twin brother) son- who died a year ago...Lynn also has a twin brother Lee and a brother Clay who both are part of the ranch operation.....

My sympathy to his family.

The world, and especially the cattle industry lost an all round good person and leader. It is a loss that will be felt far beyond his own family and friends.

Ward "Lynn" Cornwell was born with his twin brother Lee, August 15, 1951 in Glasgow, MT, son of Bill and Ann Cornwell. Being born into a life that he loved and would have chosen for himself was a blessing for Lynn. His devotion to ranching and the livestock industry was truly unique and a passion that came from within. Lynn's impact on his family, the community and the entire livestock industry has been immense.

Lynn passed away from an aortic aneurysm June 5th, 2008.

Lynn attended grade school at the Tampico school and graduated from Glasgow High school in 1969. He earned his bachelor's degree in Ag Business from Montana State University. In 1971 he married Debby Thompson and they raised their family on the ranch on Buggy Creek. He endowed his family with a respect and love for the lifestyle of the land. Lynn & Debby have four children, sons Cody (Juli) Cornwell and Kirk (Britney) Cornwell of the family ranch in Glasgow, and daughters Michelle (Chad) Hoover of Whitehall, Jamie (Eric) Hafenfeld of Weldon, California. Lynn was so proud of his eight grandsons Dallen & Dane Hoover, Jake Newton, Jack & Charlie Cornwell, Agustus Hafenfeld and Kolt & Klay Cornwell. He is survived by his two brothers Clay Cornwell, and Lee and Madylon Cornwell and their children Stuart and Audra of Glasgow.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and the Elks Lodge. He served as a Valley Electric Cooperative Board member for over 30 years and was a director of the Valley Livestock Association. Lynn was honored with the Jaycee's Outstanding Young Farmer, Friend of the FFA, and received the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce Del Strommen Award.

He was a member of the Montana Public Lands Council, serving as chairman and delegate to the National Public Lands Council. He was the NCBA Federal Lands Chairman, the Association of State Grazing Districts Chairman, the Montana Woolgrowers Association, the National Woolgrowers Association and the Montana Stockgrowers Association. He served on the Board of Directors of the Montana Stockgrowers Association from 1988 to 1992 and then as MSGA President from 1996-1998. He was on the National Cattlemen's Association Board of Directors then moved through the chairs and served as NCBA's President in 2001.

There were no strangers in Lynn's life; if he didn't know you he soon would. Lynn never forgot a name, and always had time for a visit or to tell a story. He was a leader in the livestock industry, and will leave a legacy of so much to so many.

Thanks for posting, OT. Lynn had a special place in our hearts, heard the news at the Region V CattleWomen convention in Missoula Friday morning.

:( :( :( :( :( :(

He was a leader in the cattle industry.

My sympathy goes to the family.

I had the opportunity to meet Lynn and tour part of the Cornwell ranch when the National Public Lands Council had their annual meeting in Glascow. Lynn was a great leader and spokesman for the cattle industry and public land grazers.

I've known Lynn forever- and the family have always been neighbors of ours....Wintered some cattle for them for a couple of years...Lynn and I didn't always agree on all cow politics- but we could discuss it for hours- and always part friends--and Hanta-- believe it or not-him being with the NCBA/MSGA and me belonging to R-CALF/USCA/MCA- he and I agreed on a lot more than you'd probably believe... The two of us with a bottle of Crown, probably could have had them all unified

I have to tell how Lynn got me "railroaded" into my first experience of my "political career"...Back about 20-25 years ago we had a nasty teachers strike up here- and due to the fact of their jobs and business's being intimidated by teachers boycotts- several of the schoolboard members resigned or didn't run again the next year....
This type intimidation made me kind of mad- so when 2 days before the final filing date one of the positions didn't have a candidate, I decided to pick up an application....When I did they told me Lynn had picked one up...I called him that night- and he said he was going to file- so I told him I wouldn't...He convinced me to go ahead and that way show support for the board- and we'd both run for the seats open- so next day I filed...
Long story short- Lynn never took his in- so I as the only candidate filing was almost automatically elected...When I called Lynn about why he didn't file-- he told me, you got more time and can handle the politics better than I can....After 4 years of nasty fighting with the union- I told him I'd never forgive him

According to what the Doc's have told the family- he could have been in the intensive care of the Mayo Clinic and they couldn't have saved him- as it was a massive rupture of the Aorta...
I guess the Big Boss needed someone to advocate public land rights in Heaven...

He will be greatly missed.....

I attended Lynns funeral yesterday- and from the minute I drove into the ranch- it rained....Lynn's favorite weather! :) Outside funeral-The dress of the day was longjohns, slickers and soggy hats..
I don't think I've seen as many people at a funeral before- lots of folks I knew- and many from the western part of the state and out of area I didn't...Quite a few cow politician folks..
Must have been 600-700 people- maybe more- hard to tell- with some ducking into leantos/sheds and under trees to get out of the rain-- but some had to park at the shipping corrals and walk 1/2 mile down to the ranchbuildings....Elks club was packed for the dinner afterward-and set up to serve lunch for 600 people...

Anyway Lynn started it going- and thruout the afternoon and the nite- we picked up .8...Water puddles everywhere... :)
And the weather boys say it should start again tonite with Thunderstorms- turning to rain- and continue thru Thursday :D
