A growing issue and concern all over the world are these dead zones. Low-oxygen areas in the water where everything dies off, caused by nutrient toxicity in the water, which simply put is runoff from agricultural fertilizers, chemicals, and industrial chemicals; a process known as eutrophication. Scientists and analysts from the World Resources Institute and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science conducted the research and compiled it on this site:

Scary stuff.
