That's funny, I've been watching a Killdeer sitting on a nest next to a fence post for a while. Yesterday the babies were running around the paddock where we were about to put the stud horse out. My wife caught one.
As we were trying to catch the baby the mother was trying to act injured to distract us away from the baby. I've actually never seen that before.

Good photos CC. You are fortunate to have all the wonderful green foliage there. Isn't growing up out in the country about the best thing that could happen to a person? I have been seening lots of day old antelope fawns here lately. That is about the only time they are cute. lol.

lol ben H thats weird!! hahah my baby killdeer was cuter :P took about 15 minutes to catch that lttle thing they can motor!!!  And then the parents were acting injured my dog decided she would like to catch that thing and she started chassing them! it was quite a riot!!

Tap, yes theres alot of green, but also a lot of ticks! Growin up in the country is the best place for any kid to grow up! I want a baby antelope never seen one of them, havent spotted any fawns yet... but i saw gosselings and ducklings yesterday, couldnt catch those!

I was coming back from Forsyth the other day and there was an antelope right off of the road with twin fawns that were just born trying to get their first milk and I did not have the camera with me. They are so cute when they are little. Have not seen any baby elk yet but they should be having them, just got to remember the camera

Canadian Cowgirl,

What is wrong with your photographs? Heck, I think they are really quite good, especially the ones of your cattle. I like the way you have used the foliage and scenery in your photography. Please take more and post them for us.

I love to watch those tiny baby Killdeer too. I have always thought of them as cotton balls on stilts! A mother bird faking an injury can torment a poor dog. The canine will always fall for it and end up in a disappointing chase.

We have Curlews here in the sandhills. I don't know how prevalent they are elsewhere. They have a very violent method of luring or scaring you away from their nests. The sound they make is enough to scare a person, but when they dive-bomb you from high in the air, it will raise the hair on your neck! As a kid they scared me to death. I actually haven't noticed this much as I've gotten older. I don't know if they have changed behavior or if I don't pay as much attention to them as I used to. I presume its the latter.

JF.. We don't have curlews around here (Well, maybe we do but I don't see any) but our redwind blackbirds will do that to you from time to time.. Good gosh nothing more much funnier than watching a 200 pound guy get chased out of the pasture by divebombing 3 ounce birds, lol.... Of course that is you happen to be on the receving end of one of the attacks..... Doesn't seem to happen much but everyonce in a while it is like a scene straight out of "The Birds"

Oh, and speaking of baby antelope...

Once many years ago, I drove upon a pair of twins. They were just old enough to really run and there was no mother in sight. They both jumped up quick and stood still watching me. I stopped and turned off the engine to observe them. They were very curious about this strange vehicle and crept very cautiously for a closer look, with one twin more brave than the other who was backing him up like a shadow.

As they gained in confidence, they circled closer & closer, sizing me with every step. All at once the bravest one lost his courage and bolted, running smack into the other one. They did not go very far before they stopped to collect themselves and started the process all over again.

This hilarious procedure was repeated over & over until they were quite close to my pickup. Finally Momma called to them from a distant hill and they took off in a beeline back to her as fast as they could.

This cute, funny incident is one of my favorites and I still chuckle whenever I think of it.

Ya'll are alot faster than me...I chased my little killdeer around just trying to get it trapped long enuff for a photo...I don't think I'd of ever caught him...they are speed demons! Cute pictures ya'll got though... :)

We have pinion jays :x They come around periodically and rape & pillage our songbird bird feeders. They also eat all the dog and cat food they can. One day one of our cats thought it would be great to catch and eat one of those plump birds, so he caught one. It was screaming and cawing and 5 others jays came swooping down, pecking and scaring the cat so he would let their buddy go. Wish I had the camcorder at the time, would've won "funniest home video" I'll bet.
