MERLE'S DOOR, an interesting dog book

I'm halfway through this book about an intelligent yellow lab mix hunter type dog and it's writer/owner who doesn't believe in the standard training for dogs but lets the dog problem-solve himself. Very enjoyable with its mix of current science and biography. What did the rest of you think about this best seller? Makes me yearn for a smart doggy again.
