As I was driving tonight about 5:30, the whole northern sky lit up, near the ground there was a huge orange glow. It was big, whatever it was. I almost thought I could see a smoke trail also. I believe it had to be in Canada, either Sask. or Alberta, not sure how far away it was, but it was massive. Did anybody else see this?
It sure looked like it would have done some damage.

It was on the news tonight at 6 . They're suppost to have film footage of it at 11pm Mountain time. I doubt I'll stay up for it, I'll see it on the morning news. Lots of folks from AB and SK had seen it... I guess Montana too.

Possible meteor lights up the skies in northern Alberta
2 hours ago

EDMONTON — A possible meteor lit up both the sky and the telephone lines in Western Canada on Thursday evening.

Around 5:30 p.m., a huge flash of light briefly turned the dark skies into daylight. Reports of sightings of the light and possibly a fireball came from Edmonton to Regina to Swan River, Man. People got so excited that RCMP in Lloydminster, on the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary, issued a news release asking people to stop calling them.

The excitement quickly spread to the scientific community, which was agog with the possibility the fireball might have dropped meteorites to the ground.

"Wow. That's impressive," said Chris Herd, associate professor of Earth and Atmospheric sciences at the University of Alberta, when told of the wide geographical swath of reports.

"To see something from that far away, that's pretty substantial. The potential is that it's big. That tells you that the meteoroid is probably a good size. There's a pretty high chance that it dropped meteorites."

He said that pinpointing the location of any meteorites depends on two factors - people calling in to say they've found such space rocks, and people calling to report how far afield the fireball was spotted.

"The more reports that you have into that fireball-reporting ... the more data you have and then people can reduce that data and try and pinpoint where it may have landed."

He said typically, meteorites fall within a radius of a few kilometres.

The source of the meteor can only be determined once the meteorites are examined, said Heard, who is also curator of a collection of meteorites at the Edmonton university.

"The vast majority of the meteorites that we have, we're fairly certain, come from the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter."

Marcel Gobeil was on his acreage west of Beaumont, Alta., waiting for his wife to come home at the time.

"I just happened to look outside facing east," he said. "All of a sudden I saw this big flash coming down and I thought somebody was playing tricks on me, like fireworks behind the house or something.

"Just before that I heard a boom. I didn't know if it was a tree against the house. It was green and blue and it was coming down pretty fast."

Gobeil said the light display eventually turned orange, yellow and red and lasted 10 seconds.

"I was waiting for it to explode," he said. "It looked similar to when we watch (news reports) in Afghanistan. When I didn't see that, I said, 'well, that's something from outer space.' I'm sure it landed way out in Winnipeg or something."

Gobeil said he only wished he'd gotten a picture of the other-worldly event.

"It's exciting - both scary and really nice."

I saw the fireworks. I wasn't sure what the main glowing was but there were fireballs shooting down as well. It kind of looked like fireworks going wrong. Pretty interesting for sure. :!:

I didn't see it but Greg did. He was at work and him and his oiler seen it,said neither one of them said anything at first then the radios lite up all the truckers, cat drivers, etc had seen it too. They figured it landed pretty close but guess it being so bright one would think that.

Interesting to find out where it landed.

The space station went over last nite about 6:30 PM GA time...I wonder if they saw anything?

Would love to see a link or story about more of this as the info comes in....this is neat stuff for sure.

Here's a bit of a story

They had it on the news here also, some kind of fire ball.Peolple in Sacremento,Ca saw it.Maybe it was that grease gun they lost the other day that floated away trying to come home. Nasa said they'ed like the gun back. :)

Mrs. Greg you have never seen the northern lights in the different colors????
My first memory of the lights they were red, green and purple. I still remember them 30 years later.
I think it was 5 or 6 years ago the lights were seen clear across MT and I think reports were down to Colorado. They pretty much lit up the night sky. They were just about every color. It was pretty neat to be standing outside and watch them dacing right above us.

I've only seen the tinges of faint green in the ones we see here. We get spectacular Northern Light shows but other then the green no colours. My BF lives about 7 hrs North of me and she says the colours are amazing

Good thing the USA has COOL so non of those radioactive cows from Canada get into their food supply.

here is a pretty good video

Not sure why, but what I seen seemed to big much bigger and brighter. Maybe the video doesn't show the true size and brightness. Maybe it had something to do with me looking thru more of the atmoshere from a greater distance.
Similiar to why a full moon looks much bigger as it comes up from the Horizon.

My brother and neice who live six miles apart, both saw and had their windows vibrate from the sonic boom! And who thought Armegedan
(spelling) was only a movie. Once in a two life experience the scientist say.
