Mineral bolus

Probably a good idea but it would be a long day putting them down 3 or 400 cows. :cowboy:

I'm waiting for a pour on version :kid:

I doesn't replace a good mineral program. Probably more for people on associations or forest service where no one can agree on what kind of mineral, or they don't think mineral is needed. It's better than nothing, but you are right BMR, have to get them in and give them the cartridge. Takes 2, if I remember correctly, for a cow. Supposedly good for 250 days.

I don't think they are claiming to replace a mineral programme of any kind, looks like they are providing trace mineral and vitamins.

So, why would you give them if you are on a mineral program already? I went to a meeting on them and they said the boluses won't replace a good mineral program, but work good in certain instances, or for those who don't feed mineral. There are those people out there, you know.

If you want to go through the work of running them through the chute, they are better than nothing.

HMMMM, Very interesting. I don't really understand why this is needed. If you fill your mineral troughs and offer mineral AND salt 24/7 the cows will eat it , Its not hard work putting out minerals unless your trying to feed it every day like creep. I know back in the 80's we did that every other day and some cows didn't get anything. We would put out 4 or 5 bags in feed bunks during the winter while on oats and rye. The cows would come running a consume every grain of it. then in the late 80's we started using mineral troughs year round and the consumption went down and the conceptions went up.

If there are actually those out there foolish enough to not be on a mineral programme already, surely they would be already feeding a TM salt for a little trace mineral top up.

I helped give a fly bolus a few years ago to 250 dairy cows. You talk about a long day... I noticed the next year that snake oil product wasn't around.

I would think that the stress of being worked would about outweigh any benefit, especially if you're on a good mineral program, like Faster horses said.
