Mineral Feeders

What kind of feeders do most of you use? I have some hastings with the wind thing on top, but if they have a full bag in them and the wind isn't blowing 20 plus they don't turn. I have greased them so that's not a problem. We havn't been getting much rain this year, but is seems even 10 hundreths looks like an inch in the mineral feeder. Just looking for a better way to keep the mineral dry.
 
We used to get some lick tubs in cut off barrels so we use them for or Vigortone mineral. Works great. The light weight tubs they use now for lick tubs doesn't make very good loose mineral tubs as they blow away and break up easily.
 
Vigortone doesn't ruin when it gets wet due to particle size. Not that we know much about that this year. So darn dry!

Vigortone has some wonderful poly feeders that anyone can buy and
one of our customers has some older ones and ordered some new ones
(the old ones are fine, but he needed more). Anyhow, when he got
them he was pleasantly surprised and called to tell us, "You know,
these older poly feeders were good, the new ones are even better."

They are on a stand and turn with the wind and have some kind
of good bearing. You can PM me for more information if you wish.

We also have ones that sit on the ground with a cover over them, but
I've not sold any because my area sales manager doesn't think the
calves will lift that cover to get to the mineral. This time of the year
the calves eat as much mineral as the cows do. These sell well in
other areas and they are really tough. I think you can leave the cover
off too, but not sure how much mineral they hold.

What Mr. FH liked was a regular feed trough--those aluminum ones
with the rubber bottom--they are real easy to move and they don't
tip over easy and you can put out quite a bit of mineral at one time.

I use old lick tubs placed in old 10.00x20 truck tires chained together. I just hook them behind truck or 4wheeler and move to next pasture. Really works great rotational grazing. And the cost is free.
 
I use a hasting feeder that sits right on the ground and has a rubber top that the cattle lift to get to the mineral. I really like them cattle don't shove them around to bad and never had them tip them over. Rain and snow stays out(not so much if the wind blows 60mph) calves can lift the lid and get to the mineral just fine. Holds 3 bags plus some loose rock salt. The one down fall of them the cattle will step on them and the top gets shoved inside and if you don't catch it before it rains the mineral will get wet. A couple of mine the top where the hole is, is getting ripped up and the top comes off pretty easy.

The best part was you got two free with pre booked mineral order at the beginning of the year. Plus my uncle owns the feed store where I get my mineral so I get a pretty good deal on them. I have 10 of them from the last few years and I use some of them to hold salt blocks also.
 
This is the only mineral feeder I would ever own. You will never waste any mineral with these. :lol:

I use blue plastic barrels with the side cut open. Hang them from a tree limb with some old roller chain.Inexpensive and durable,of course you need tree's in this application.
 
Implement tires turned inside out, and for the smaller pastures i use four wheeler tires. Use 2x4's for the base and it seems to help water go thru. i used a plank on some and it just held water. Use vitaferm mineral and most of time it ok with rain unless its 2 inch plus(idk who has that kinda rain), but you can pry loose a little to wind if filled to completely full. I dont know how i can justify using some of them on the market, most cost $175 plus and then have then get destroyed. I put 2 tires out at each place one for mineral and one for salt. Pasture with rotational grazing it is nice to strap on four wheeler and move to next pasture.
 
This setup is probably similar to Denny's, but comes with it's own tree. We have found it to be a fool proof setup that works.

What brand of mineral do you feed that you get them free with booking mineral??

Only problem is Behlen quite making them and now sources Sioux Steel to make them so the price has went up to the $175 mark. Greater capacity, but I don't like the price.

Used to just use open bathtubs to feed salt and mineral back in the days of cheap mineral.

Now I don't waste any.

Sounds like we have a similar idea.
 
eatbeef, Mostly i use purina maybe they gave them out for free because there stuff kind of pricy. Not sure if it was a purina deal or the feed store was offering it.

I have hasting and the sioux feeders both are the same. I like the sioux feeders better with the three compartments rather than the hasting with two compartments. Just my opion.

Can you get 3 sacks of mineral in 2 compartments and then a sack of salt in the other?
