Does anybody know why a 4 auger is that much better then a 3 auger wagon? Do they mix quicker or better?

By the way I have a good Big Augie 14 I am looking to sell if anybody is interested.

Probably a little of both with the more uniform mix being the best thing. If you need to grind hay I'd sure look at some of the vertical mixers. Pretty pricey but great piece of equipment.

:lol: Yep Blackcattlerancher I have to agree... I hate metal- I hate extra costs- and I believe in cattle working for me-not me working for cattle...
Not knocking those in the areas that have to have them--but just darn glad we don't in this country...

Big Muddy- anyone in your area with a big commercial outfit... I know years ago the grinders were the big thing- but with the problems/breakdowns that come with them & hydraulics and moving parts and cold weather and all-- many that had those folks got rid of them and if they had some really bad feed they thought needed mixed- hired one of the commercial outfits to come grind up/pile up a huge bunch for them and then feed that......

I had the mixer wagon as we had silage put up for a few years. It was the best way to make use of the fall rye that I was growing and it was the best way to get the hay put up the year I broke my arm pretty bad. I would hire a big tub grinder to come in and chop hay to mix the silage down. It got harder to find a silage crew and one that wanted to bag it was impossible. It didn't make sense to keep tub grinding hay with no silage so I just switched back to a bale processor to feed the bunk. I also quit growing fall rye. :?
I didn't know if there was any custom tub grinders around anymore but saw 2 moving down the highway the other day. The one Mighty Giant one was working at the feedlot about forty miles from me.
I guess that iron has a purpose but backgrounding my calves works with the feed box on the pick up for pellets and the bale processor or bale grazing work fine for me.

I do have a pretty good Big Auggie 14 for sale.

It did work nice for one pass feeding of pellets or grain, hay and silage.
I also mixed my mineral right in with the batch.

Mines not for cows, it's for the calves I'm feeding. They graze very little, almost 100% of what they eat is handed to them. We were on a grazing program but it's cheaper to feed than tie up all the land in grazing then get it ready to farm again. The tractor is for the farm, not the cattle.
Before you say it's to expensive to put up feed we are in a unique situation that I'm not going into but for us its not.
And if you must know the tractor and mixer togather are have 153 in them, not 250. Both were used.

Don't let it bother you Jed. There are a lot of people on here who have little to no land cost so they keep the rest of their costs low and tell everyone how easy it is to go broke buying iron. I know where you are coming from. Equipment is a must if max production is a must.

Oh it doesn't bother me any, just like to set the facts straight. Also I learn from the way others in other areas do thngs so I hope someone can pick up something from what I do here.
Like I said its a very unique situation I have here and I would say I don't think any other area of the country can feed for less than we can and I am the only one in this part of the world with calves. No one can understand why I spend my winters feeding cattle. Cattle are hated here.

Jed, you notice OT never bothered to even inquire about what you were feeding. Just made fun of how you went about it. A carry over from his comments in the political forum. That vertical mixer is one piece of equipment that will literally pay for itself over time and contrary to what OT says, they really don't have all that many moving parts and breakdowns are seldom. Of course the quarter million dollar tractor has many other uses during the year as well like a quite sizeable row crow operation. Good move Jed. You won't regret it. Had a smaller model when I owned he dairy. Loved the think and always figured it made me a lot of money. Great mix of ingredients and saved a lot of money mixing my own feed rather than buying it from a feed company.
