Went to check on a new baby born yesterday evening right before sundown. When I drove up on the cow and calf yesterday evenin, there were 2 of those mexican buzzards sittin there beside the calf!!!! Them thangs are bad about killin a calf soon as it is born, sometimes will even kill the cow if there's enuff of em. Hopefully I caught em soon enuff and ran em off. Got there this mornin and the calf is doin fine. Noticed buzzards circling, so I stayed out there for a couple hours till it warmed up and calf got movin.

New lil heifer calf and mama.

This is the cutest thing, that lil deer, I think she's a cross of some kind,(axis or somethin) she's been on our place for 8 or so years now. Luckily no one's shot her.
She now thinks she's the designated baby sitter for the new calves. She follows them around, lays down with them...she's never had any babies herself, since she's a cross, she probably can't. But she sure is a good lil caregiver. She licks the calves just like a mama would. Mama cows dont seem to mind either.

I rode around, patched one place in the fence, then came back and found her layin down again. Shortly after this picture was taken, I eased outta the truck and tagged her. Woo Hoo then here come Mama......

Lilly, around here deer get blamed for a lot of the neosporia and lepto. With a deer constantly in the pasture and among the cattle, do you have any problems with the diseases.

no problems at all. We vacinate for lepto, but she's just one of many deer. Shes the only exotic out there, dont know where she come from. but there are definately alot more white tails runnin round.

.....and yeap... I"m ready fer rain, are you?

I have never heard of or seen a buzzard kill a calf, much less a cow. I have been around cows for 30 years. They do eat the afterbirth but thats about it. Has anybody ever seen a buzzard actually kill a newborn calf?

maybe you don't have the same kind of buzzards in north Texas? the ones with some white on 'em. we call them Mexican Buzzards.

personally, i've never seen them kill a calf where the mama got up & claimed it, but they will attack & kill baby calves if the cow is down or walks away & doesn't claim it. they'll also attack the down cow. they start at the rear end & the eyes.

I've seen it several times, once in my own pasture, and several times in neighbors pastures. These aren't yer typical turkey buzzards, these are mexican white tipped (wings) buzzards, they have a black head. They don't wait for somethin to die they will peck the calves eyes out first then go at the rest of him real fast. I've seen this in numbers of 40 plus at one time on an animal. Never have had a problem with any of the turkey buzzards tho.

Lilly,I believe you have what is commonly called black buzzards, the ones with the red heads are called turkey buzzards,we have both around here, they flock together, usually when you see buzzards you will see both.
And you are right if a cow wont claim their calf and or its in a weakened state/new born, they will kill it,as a matter of fact not just calves,I have come up on them eating deer that got caught in fence that was still alive, just in a weakened state, bottom line is yes they will eat damn near anything that is weak, dont have to be dead..............good luck

Those were indeed Black Vultures. They will attack and have become a major problem. Turkey vultures do not attack. You nned to contact US Fish & Game in an attempt to remove the black vulture from the migratory bird act (MBTA).

The precise language in the MBTA states:
"Unless and except as permitted by regulations made as hereinafter provided, it shall be unlawful at any time, by any means or in any manner, to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture, or kill, possess, offer for sale, sell, offer to barter, barter, offer to purchase, purchase, deliver for shipment, ship, export, import, cause to be shipped, exported, or imported, deliver for transportation, transport or cause to be transported, carry or cause to be carried, or receive for shipment, transportation, carriage, or export, any migratory bird, any part, nest, or egg of any such bird, or any product, whether or not manufactured, which consists, or is composed in whole or in part, of any such bird or any part, nest or egg."

As you can see from the above stated legal language, migratory birds are highly regulated. While some, such as waterfowl, can be legally hunted and possessed, there is no such provision for raptors. Eagles, ospreys, hawks, falcons, kites, owls, vultures and all other native North American birds of prey are strictly protected, to include a prohibition against the taking or possession of their parts such as feathers or talons. The only exceptions generally allowed for individuals to these prohibitions require permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Educational and scientific institutions are exempted from most permit requirements.

Penalties for violations of the MBTA can go up to $15,000 and 6 months imprisonment for common violations. The sale or barter of migratory birds is a felony with penalties up to $500,000 and 2 years imprisonment. Some raptors, such as the bald eagle, are also protected under the Endangered Species Act, and both the bald and golden eagles are also protected under the Eagle Act.

Questions concerning the protection of raptors should be directed to a local state Conservation Officer or the nearest office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
