Most Meaningful Song Ever . . .

Those are the ones that brings tears to my eyes.
Music............what brings harmony to all in more ways than one.

Yup, music is tops! I could (and actually do for the most part) easily live without movies, T.V., sports, most magazines, etc., etc., but I shudder to think of a life without music.

I'm guessing we were in high school or early college the same years :-) I'm trying to figure out how I was introduced to Gordon Lightfoot.

I've listened to and loved Gordon Lightfoot for years and years, I have every single album he's made and love them all. :D , although I do prefer his earlier years better.
My older sister actually came home with the first GL album that we had in the house, I was in my 'young teens' at the time. It was the" Did She Mention My Name" album, I couldn't stop listening to it. Im sure I wore it out. From that point on I continued to buy any and all the GL albums. I still have them all. I guess you can say that GL is one of my favorite artists, along with Ian Tyson and quite a few others, but those two are the top of my favorite list. :)
Here is a great GL site that I hang out at once in awhile.

Down the hall their voices ring, their feet are on the run
Phantoms on the winter sky, together they do come
Faded lips and eyes of blue they're carried in the wind
Their laughter filled the countryside but they'll not laugh again

All the games are ended now, their voices have been stilled
Their fathers built the tools of war by which they all were killed
Their fathers made the uniforms showing which side they were on
And the young boys wear the middle name for guns to pray upon

You've seen the fires in the night, watched the devil as he smiles
You've heard a mother's mournful cry as she searches for her child
You've seen the lines of refugees, the faces of despair
And wondered at the wise men who never seem to care

Goodbye you lost children, God speed you on your way
Your little beds are empty now, your toys are put away
Your mother sings a lullaby as she gazes at the floor
Your father builds more weapons and marches out once more

Down the hall their voices ring, their feet are on the run
Phantoms on the winter sky, together they do come
Faded lips and eyes of blue they're carried in the wind
Their laughter filled the countryside but they'll not laugh again

"Unanswered Prayers"

Just the other night at a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be

She was the one that I'd wanted for all times
And each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mine
And if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all

And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he may not answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

Some of God's greatest gifts are all too often unanswered...
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine
Singin'...

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

If I were the king of the world
Tell you what I'd do
I'd throw away the cars and the bars and the war
Make sweet love to you
Sing it now...

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

[electric piano]

You know I love the ladies
Love to have my fun
I'm a high life flyer and a rainbow rider
A straight shootin' son-of-a-gun
I said a straight shootin' son-of-a-gun

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the world
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

I wanna tell you
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

(fading)
Joy to the world
All the boys and girls

(Woody Guthrie)

[Chorus:]
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

[Chorus]

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

[Chorus]

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

[Chorus]

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

[Chorus]

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

passin' thru---have ya ever heard "amazing grace" on the bagpipes at a funeral???? guaranteed that is one that will bring tears to your eyes!! One of my all-time favorites!!!

One of the most powerful hymns that I know is "Eternal Father, When to Thee". It simply makes me feel completely insignificant before God, yet completely involved in His plan and completely secure in His arms.

Eternal Father, when to thee,
Beyond all worlds by faith I soar,
Before Thy boundless majesty,
I stand in silence and adore.

But, Savior, Thou art by my side,
Thy voice I hear, Thy face I see,
Thou art my friend, my daily guide,
God over all, yet God with me.

And Thou, Great Spirit, in my heart,
Dost make Thy temple day by day.
The Holy Ghost of God Thou art,
Yet dwellest in this house of clay.

(Now, for the last verse, pull out all the stops and let'er go!)

Blest Trinity, in whom alone,
All things created move or rest,
High in the heavens Thou hast Thy throne,
Thou hast Thy throne within my breast.

(Harvey D. Ganse, 1872 ; William Knapp, 1738.)

What a great God we serve, and yet He wants relationship with each one of us. It is pretty easy to lose sight of this sometimes in the pressures and business of life.

If I were to try to pick the secular song which had the biggest impact on me, I think it would have to be the Eagles' "Hotel California". The last 2 verses especially drive home to me the point that we may think we are in control of the things to which we give ourselves, but, in fact, they may be in control of us. "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast", or, "You may check out any time you like, but you may never leave . . ." Pretty chilling words.

EAGLES LYRICS

"Hotel California"

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man,
'We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave!'

Followed by a long, beautiful lead guitar solo.

RW, no I haven't heard Amazing Grace on bagpipes, but I can imagine. Bagpipes can add so much to a song. It would be neat to know how to play them.

You Canadian ranchers were talking about Ian Tyson and I realized it was Ian of Ian and Sylvia so I went and heard him last fall live in Alexandria, Virginia. WOW. I bought about 4 CDs and have listened to him non-stop ever since. He's great in person. Thanks for the link.

Yes, Ian Tyson is the Ian of the Ian & Sylvia team. (they used to be married). I actually didn't care much for Sylvia. I think Ian does MUCH better on his own :D
Which CD's did you get? I have all of his as well.

Another one that does it for me. I heard it done by MercyMe.

I Can Only Imagine
Words and Music by Bart Millard
© 1999 - Simpleville Music

I can only imagine what it will be like,
When I walk by Your side
I can only imagine what my eyes will see,
When Your Face is before me!
I can only imagine. I can only imagine.

Refrain
Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still?
Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing Hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine, when that day comes,
When I find myself standing in the Son.
I can only imagine, when all I will do,
Is forever, forever worship You!
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine!
I can only imagine!
I can only imagine!
I can only imagine!

I can only imagine,
When all I will do
is forever, forever worship You!
I can only imagine!

This song reminds me of riding in my sister's boyfriend's big red dodge convertible heading down to the "Pinery Provincial Park"(southern Ontario) to go swimming with them when I was a kid.
I'm sure they didn't appreciate little sister tagging along on their date. :lol2:

Morning has broken
Like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird

Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the world

Sweet, the rain's new fall
Sunlit from heaven
Like the first dew fall
On the first grass

Praise for the sweetness
Of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness
Where His feet pass

Mine is the sunlight
Mine is the morning
Born of the one light
Eden say play

Praise with elation
Praise ev'ry morning
God's recreation of the new day

Morning has broken
Like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird

Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the world
