Cool , clear, water; water.... Old song isn't it?

In the song Cool Water, I'm not sure they were talking about it being quite this cool. The cowboy was riding in the desert and hallucinating. "Keep a-movin' Dan, don't you listen to him Dan. He's a devil not a man, and he spreads the burning sand with water.....Cool, clear water." The mirages were getting to him.

Interesting...seeing the cows on pasture sure doesn't seem to mirror the Cold weather you must have to freeze that water.

I imagine Dan would have liked to have a drink out of that tank, what do you bet? Matter of fact, I would. I'm going to go get a drink now. Makes me thirsty.

The heifers on the meadow picture was taken about 24 hours before the icy tank pictures. What a difference a day makes. :?

Soapweed; Something I've been wondering about is what happens when it gets severely cold........how do you keep those windmill pumps from freezing up? We can have lots of fun just keeping insulated, heated water bowls running!

Hopefully, a small vent hole (about a sixteenth of an inch in diameter) is open and working properly. This vent is about four feet below ground level. If the wind quits blowing, it allows the water in the pipe to drain back below that level so as not too freeze. As long as the wind is blowing, the water doesn't freeze. If it keeps pumping, there is usually not too much ice on the tank.

We would "bank" some mills. That would mean wrapping the pipe above ground with gunny sacks, then placing a barrel around the stand pipe and filling that with manure and straw. That was insurance that the drain hole had time to work.

Soapweed do you have a highside on your tanks that the cattle can come to without walking on the ice?

In most cases, we do. Sometimes I have to put a little hay or sand out on the ice to provide better footing. If the wind is blowing, we don't usually have to chop much ice on the tanks. This morning, the temperature is hovering at about zero and there is no wind. I will have to use the axe today.

Oh ya Soapweed...it was defintly the morning for the axe... :( I've so enjoyed the last several days before...warm temps,,no ICE!!!! I knew when I got up this morning that as still as it was, I'd better wear heavier gloves to handle that axe...oh well, as hubby says all the time to me,,,It's job security....lol
Your wind ice art was a lot cooler than the ones I seen this morning...guess that tumble weed and fence made for good blocking of the water spray...that was pretty cool looking...Thanks

You captured some good pictures again Soapweed. You proved that there is always some good with the bad (cold) if a person chooses to look for it.
