I'm just curious. Anyone here who can see Mt. Shasta from where they live? It's a beautiful mountain that I've got tons of pictures of. I hear though that it is expected to blow within 25 years. Anyone know if that's true?

Speaking of this part of the word, anyone effected by that earthquake? I heard it was a 7.6 Richter. Whew!

I lived in a truck for a year and a half and saw Mt Shasta pretty often then. There's some real pretty country in northern california and I always enjoyed that area. My most favorite truck stop in the whole USA was Pollard Flat at Lake Head near there. Its small, out of the way, good food, family owned, friendly and loaded with character. Its like going into someones home to eat. They have one small restroom next to the dinning area with no electric vent, you just open the window and let in the fresh mountain air. They also have a clawfoot bath tub in there with a lady manican in it. First timers there venturing in see the lady manican, gasp, step back, slam the door and say "there's someone in there taking a bath". Always got a chuckle out of that.

Tumbleweed: "They also have a clawfoot bath tub in there with a lady manican in it. First timers there venturing in see the lady manican, gasp, step back, slam the door and say "there's someone in there taking a bath".

Wish we could do that for a party. what a hoot! :)

Tumbleweed, never heard of that place, but then again, I wouldn't stop at a truck stop. Well, I do see Mt. shasta once in awhile when I go up there to see family. there is a legend of a civilization living inside of the mountain. Pretty eery, but too stupid to be believed.
I did find that volcanoes, which Mt. Shasta is, explode approximately every two hundred years, and Mt. shasta is coming up to that point. doesn't mean it will be a devastating Pompeii or Mt. St. Helens blast, it could be a little one, but you don't want to be near it when it does.

Sierraman you should stop in there if you get a chance. Not many trucks stop there and its not like any other truck stop I was ever at. Its about 30 miles south of Weed at exit 712 eagles roost RD. The place is loaded with antiques and memorabilia. The family that run it live right there and travelers that I visited with loved it because it felt as comfortable as home.

Well, Tumbleweed, you must be talking about Dunsmuir. that's real close to where iam when I'm there. I have stopped at a few truck stops to eat. They usually sell worthless junk and greasy food :( but you're right there are tons of exceptions. Also, if you ever travel through Nevada, a casino/breakfast buffet is great to eat at. I don't gamble, but they offer rel inexpensive decent food so that gamblers will have reason to stay longer. There's a bunch of 'em out there too. :D

Sierraman, the place I'm talking about is 20 miles south of dunsmuir and back away from the road a little ways. Don't think they have much of a sign up to pull people in there. Looks like a rambling old house with some old machinery alongside it and a gas pump out front. The only reason I pulled in there the first time was because I was running out of hours on my log book and couldn't make it to weed.

You're right about the poor food at most truck stops and there wern't to many places I looked forward to eating. I would get hungry for a good steak though and order one up. All of them were tender and juicy but flavorless. If you put enough salt, pepper and steak sauce on them you could eat them. Some would be soaked in a marinade and I had to send a couple of those back and order some chicken, just couldn't get them down. Nevada was a good place to get a meal like you say. My second most favorite place was at mesquite nv. across the street from the virgin river food mart at exit 122. Can't remember the name of the casino but you could get a 20 oz. T bone with all the trimmings and a cold beer for $7.77. If I was stopping for the night I'd drink the beer, if I was going on I'd have a coke. Those steaks were always delicious and as good as any I've ever had in an eating place. I don't gamble either so they lost money on me.

Mt. Lasen is the one they say will cut loose first. Afriend has a place in Red Bluff - I do the dishes looking out the window at Lasen.

Are you talking about the resterant just north of the Shasta Rest stop on 5 just south of the Weed turn off - on the west side of hi-way

If the weathers right and we're up on Mt Hamleton we can see Shasta 200± off

Mt. Lassen blew about 95 years ago, that gives it another 105 years. I went to Mt. Lassen Park last month.
I've probably passed that restaurant, tumbleweed, a bunch of times, but surely never stopped there. It's close enough to my family, I would stop at them, and I do.

I e-mailed the department of the interior contact service concerning Yellowstone national park and asked this to them:
'I hear that there is a super volcano called Yellowstone. When is this expected to explode? what do you expect to happen when it does? Thanks for your time."
No answer yet, but I'll let you know what they say.

Sierraman - In 1988 I seriously considered moving my practice to Weed, Calif., and buying a home at Lake Shastina, a resort area near Weed. The lot we chose was 15 miles as the crow flys from the top of Mt. Shasta! It is a spectacular part of God's world which 'makes it's own weather' (as most very high mountains do). After doing some extensive research into the tectonic plate phenomena which exists up and down the entire West Coast area - we decided that - no - we would seek our mountains elsewhere to retire. That is why we are in Colorado at the present time. However, Mt. Shasta is a magnificent and spectacular link in the Cascade Chain of (Extinct???) Volcanos - among them being Mt. St. Helens, Crater Lake and Mt. Lassen among others. As 'they' say " - - One of these days - - -  KA-BLOO-EEE! There is going to be "THE BIG ONE" and that is not just conjecture - it WILL happen sooner or later! The Pacific tectonic plate is sliding Eastward UNDERNEATH the American Continental plate - and it is moving all of the time. It may be five days, or it may be five years, or 500 years, but it WILL happen and goodby California and a large part of the West Coast and perhaps the Americas when it does. I know this sounds pretty morbid, and I am not a morbid person - facts are facts. As far as knowing if it will "blow" in 25 years - NOBODY really KNOWS when. I feel that I had brains enough to get the hell out of the state while I had the chance! Besides, it was too %(*@*$#&*(*%!(^ Liberal for this Republican! Don't get me started!!

My Gosh - if I saw a naked lady in a clawfoot bathtub, I would at least stay long enough to determine if she was a manican or - or - or really real! I think it is mandatory to make absolutely certain of your facts before you run out and start a rumor!! :) :)

Doc Harris, the word extinct? no, you mean inactive. Very few volcanoes in north america are nonextinct, because most of them are. But Mt. Shasta is inactive, not extinct. About THE BIG ONE, this was speaking of Yellowstone, so you may mean goodbye Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and..., and like TXTibbs suggested, probably 100,000 yrs. IF it is ever to happen. Besides, I don't think the world will be around in 100,000 years anyway. As for a liberal California, it really does seem liberal, especially on TV, but I know a lot of people there, and none of them are liberal, they're all staunch conservative Republican, or a regular one. It must be Southern California that gives it that liberal feel, who-wee! yes, that is it. It is so weird down there.

Near sturgis, sd there is a mountain off by itself called bear butte. The way I understand it is a moutain that started out to be a volcano but didn't erupt. One morning quite a few years ago, long before mount st. helens erupted every one started to hear rumbleing that sounded like thunder but there were no clouds or storms going on in this area. The disc jockey on the local radio station KBHB, near the base of bear butte was bob davis and he said there was smoke coming out of the top of bear butte. I believe he said they were feeling timmers and he called a geologist and did a live interview on the air with the geologist saying they were picking up some seismic activity in that area. He did more interviews as the morning went on and the rumbleing was getting louder. I'm 70 miles away and I could hear the rumbleing too. More smoke kept coming out, people were getting excited and going out to see for themselves what was going on. So they started doing live interviews with people at the site. People were calling the radio sation about it and saying they knew it was a volcano and that they also knew someday it would erupt. I think finaly they had a helicopter circling the butte and were doing interviews from there when the smoke increased, the top of the mountain started falling away and a big hairy arm came out with a sign that said " happy april fools day".

The rumbling that we all heard was a thunderstorm bob had recorded and was playing in the background of everything they did on the air that morning. The interviews were done earlier with the help of some of his friends. I think he got fired for that one cause the FCC frowns on stuff like that. Les Kleven the owner of the station said he had to fire him a dozen times for doing things like that but he always hired him back because other than being an incurable practical joker he was good help.

Sierraman - you will notice that I put the word "Extinct" in parenthesis followed by ???. Agreed, inactive - AT THE MOMENT! Crater Lake is extinct (also the DEEPEST lake in Us - don't know how deep!) I understand the concerns regarding Yellowstone - however THE BIG ONE is, in California, relating to the entire west Coast earthquake Faults. I lived in Southern California for 35 years, and you are RIGHT - Weird and Fruits and Nuts! And, of course, we have all known of or have heard of the 'strange' and 'odd' and 'fruity' limp wrists in that mecca of homosexuality - San Franqueersco!! Again - one reason we are not there - ANYMORE, Baby! Don't even like to return to visit friends. I know one can't generalize - but the Left Coast comes pretty close to qualifying.

That would be absolutely hysterical! I'd be willing to bet that would be a party no one would ever forget! :lol2: :lol2:

I'm from Northern California and am considering moving back there with my Manhattan boyfriend. I love that area and would like to find a remote, rural, beautiful CHEAPER area to live in, not too far from my mom and sisters and the ocean. Beautiful country.
Try Susanville or Hat Creek. - - -Rural, Beautiful and Cattle Country. And out of the HOT  Valley! (That's San Joaquin Valley).
