With the thoughts of running out of warm clear days, I couldn't resist heading for the desert. Neither or my partners was able to go, so I headed out alone. Well almost alone, I had SPOT. my Satellite Emergency Locater. We have had some heavy rain fall lately and a lot of those desert roads are missing now. I headed for Eight Mile Spring having seen about sixty head there early in the spring. A lot of glassing turned up only about fifteen head. Driving south toward Rydalch Pass I only had trouble getting across one wash out.

At The Black Knoll I ran onto this palomino that I took pictures of on the other side of the mountain last spring. He sure hasn't put on any weight.

At Wild Cat Basin I located three head about a 1-1/2 miles away, up close to the base of the mountain.

I drove on to Cochran Spring and found no tracks around the water sense the last rain three days ago. Back at Wild Cat I searched the area again and came up with about twenty five head.

There is a wash that leads in their general direction. I hiked up about a mile, trying two different forks until I got a lot closer that I ever thought I could.

I was looking at a mustang through a opening in the cedar. The camera was looking at something else.

When you stick you head up enough to get a picture, they will see your there.

These paints sure make the pictures a lot more colorful.

The thirty five head turned into seventy head. They seemed to come out of the ground. There are a lot of gullies and cedars up higher where they are out of sight from the road. It was a long walk but the adrenalin was pumping and the hair on the back of my neck didn't settle down until I got half way back to the truck. I get better pictures of the tame bunch, but just getting any pictures of the Wild Bunch (Butch Cassidy) is worth the effort.

To bad you can't put that old Palomino down. I hate to see them suffer.
On a happier note, your pictures and story is AMAZING!!!

He sneaked up behind me the first time I saw him, and I didn't think of him as old. I thought he was sick. Now you mention it,,, I can see his problem could be more age than health. I sent his picture to the BLM manager for that area. Maybe they will take some action.
