For those of you who have heard the song about "Some Days are Diamonds",,,,, this day was one of those diamond days. I've mentioned before about the palomino stud we call Ol One Ear. The last time I saw him up close was about two years ago. I got a look at him last fall at about two miles away. Last Thursday I headed for The River Bed looking for him and the two cousins that are also palominos. I found five head in the River Bed, but not any of the three I was hunting. Backtracking I headed down the Indian Canyon road, stopping to glass on occasion. I was ecstatic when I located a few head, a couple miles down the country. When I drove over the ridge to where I could see the band, Ol One Ear was wright there in plain sight. Twenty head all together and just waiting to have their picture taken.

These two are the only mares he is claiming.

No doubt about it,, she is giving me the "evil eye."

For a different perspective on pictures, I get down on my knees so as to not intimidate these yearlings. When he got to ten feet, I ask him to stop, he just veered off a little and kept truckin.

This old white stud kept trying to do naughty things to the mare with the colt. From what I saw,, he wasn't much of a threat. I didn't think he looked that old.

She kept asking "WHAT PART OF NO,, DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ????

It only took an hour to do a fifteen minute job. I stayed around a little longer trying to make myself believe I'd really tracked him down. It a mystery how a band of twenty horses can run that country for so long without us seeing more of them.

This was the last shot before I headed for the pickup. Better than a sunset.

Great pictures. Your patience paid off. How did the palomino lose his ear?

I can only speculate, that during a fight, another mustang stud played dirty and used his teeth. I saw a picture posted on another web site of him with blood covering his face down to his nose. Even with only one ear, he is a great looking animal. He was the least trusting of the whole band. I couldn't get very close to him.

I wouldn't be very trusting either, if someone bit my ear off. Just sayin'...

It's his survival instinct. He's gonna make sure YOU don't bite off the other one.

I'd like to get close enough to try. However it's his actions like this that makes me believe I'd come out second best. His target left the area,, post haste.
