Mustang hunting has be sporadic for the last while. During the winter some break off into smaller bands and move off into the far reaches of the desert. We find them on occasion and feel lucky when we do. It's been about three weeks sense I've been out there and I was very interested in checking out Ol Gypsy. Even though she has been given the birth control shot , she looked like she was about to give birth. On Wednesday I loaded up and headed for Davis Mountain, the last place I saw them. There were not on Davis, so I headed down the road to Government Creek. I found them close to water. I was late getting there and they had watered and was grazing away from the trough. It wasn't fun trying to get ahead of them, but we did it. The crop of spring babies was evident, even Ol Gypsy, with the "birth control brand" on her hip, was trailing a new foal.
When I looked over the camera he was about six feet away. If I'd had longer arms I could have reached out and touched him. Some of those young squirts don't have much fear.
This gray stud had been showing his ego every sense I got there. The mark on the colt looks like teeth marks. He looked less than a week old.
We found another fifty head fifteen miles further down the country. Previously they had been two bands. For some reason, they have joined forces.
Ol One Ear is looking fat and sassy. It was getting late in the day and it was hard to get the sun on the right side of him. It sure is good to have him around again.
Best looking mustang on the west desert. (next to Gypsy)
