First calf of year

nice looking group there stretch. I like the darker red Herfs, that yellow tint just makes me turn off , not sure I can explain it, but I am trying to cull those cows out as time goes on....

yours look to be that darker red....

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I have been culling real hard to get a good bunch to start over with. We have been darn dry in my neck of the woods in the last couple years and so I have been trying really hard to rest some pastures to get them to recover from many (and I stress many years) of terrible grazing habits. I am saving a bunch of heffers out of last yrs calf crop and hoping for some nice cows out of them. Also I got the 4 from VCR to add to the ones that I already had. I to really like the darker red color myself. My last bull that I had last 3 yrs and the one I just got have both been from Scott McGee at the Valley Creek Ranch in Fairbury Neb. The calf that I showed you is from a Lawman bull and the ones that will come out next year will be out of a Kodiak bull. I wish I had double or tripple the numbers I have but I guess Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is a solid herd of cattle.

Funny what a little grain can do to turn a big ole bull into a big baby..

What do you think there frame score is?

I would have to say my herd would average a strong 5. There are a few that would be a bit lower and a few that would be a bit higher (4.5-5.5). They ran out all fall on some dry grass and got 1-2 lbs of Distiller grain till a couple weeks back. Then I brought them home to be closer so I could keep an eye on them better for calving and have since went to a mix of ground hay (alf-ph-straw) and 1-2 lbs of my grain grinding mix. Not really an exact science but I'm getting better at figuing out a good balance for them and they look all the better for it. Maybe one of these days I will get things right and can be satisfied that I am doing right by every one of them. Oh and just a P.S. back nearly 30 yrs ago my first cow was a little strawberry roan one. She was a different color (not like the rest polled hereford) than the rest of dads and I will never forget it dad said " See that one over there that is yours to make you a herd from." I am guessing that he did it that way so I could easily see mine and she was a good solid ole cow. She threw some real good calves and paid many a bill for me over the years. Hope to do something like that for each one of my 3 kids...

 That is my right hand man Cody (my son) he is 8 and is showing signs of being some real good help. I made his day with that little deal. However I reminded him that never to get in the pen with any of the critters when I wasn't there to watch....
