We went straight from chemo to emily's crosscountry meet-she got bumped up an age group but finished 7th out of 48 in a 3K race in 40 degree farenheit over hills and into a stiff wind. One girl keeled over running up a big steep hill and rolled about half way down-I'll give her credit she got up and finished. In my opinion any kid who runs xcountry is an athlete no matter where they finish.

Good for Emily. My boy competed in the 2k on Tuesday and came in 15 out of 39. He walked the last few hundred meters because he was spitting blood. Came out too fast and tried to power through it. It is a pretty good mental sport as well.

Back in highschool. We had a mean ole lady coach. MEAN!!! I was all into sprints and doin hurdles until I started for her. This woman realllllly wanted me to do long distance. So what did she do.....??? she set the hurdles up backwards and told me to run them. Ok....hurdles don't turn over if you touch them when they are backwards. After clearin a few....and noticin that. I stopped right there and asked her why they were backwards. She told me it was to build character. I flat told her right there, "no that was to build scars on your knees and hands when you crash and burn." No desire to crash and burn without good cause......So I gave the long distance a try as well.....first day out....12 miles. Haha, not much runnin went on that day.
Didn't take but about a week for me to figure out I in now way shape or form was cut out to be in this woman's program. She was nuts!!! I loved runnin back then....but not for her.

Congrats to your kiddo's tho......It takes lots of self disipline to do what they are doin.

Emily had her last meet of the year today-20F with blowing snow and she won it. Guess Dad's little pep talk this morning worked-now we can concentrate on hockey for the winter-she made the tier one boys team should be a fun year-be weird not coaching though.

NR, you're never done coaching - it just might not be from the bench this year. I admire the time and effort you have put into your kids to help make them what they are.

When I see and hear how guys like you and Leanin' H and Silver invest in your families, it makes me think that this world still has a lot of good people in it. You will be rewarded for your work.

You aren't kidding I'm never done coaching-not really skilled enough to run a great practice but I love running a bench.Kind of drives my wife crazy I tend to watch a hockey game from a coaches perspective lol. Pretty lucky to have coached with some great hockey guys over the years. Emily's coach this year is an exNHL'er so she's in for a good year.
