My journal entry for Monday, July 1, 1968
I had it lucky today. The folks took pity on me and let me sleep until 10:00. After a leisurely breakfast, I put gas in the car and cleaned it out. [Someone must have taken the "clunker" back to Rushville while I was on the canoe trip, and brought home our own car.]
We left for Valentine at 12:00, meeting Ken at the turn-off, and he went with us. We arrived at the Neal Keller ranch for a judging at 2:00 p.m.
We barely got there in time. [Probably we forgot to allow for the change from Mountain time to Central time.] Ken, Sandra, Sybil, and I signed up, and right away there was a type demonstration.
Three classes were judged—heifers, horses, and bulls. I scored 48, 40, and 49 respectively, with a 40 on my reasons for the class of bulls. A good lunch followed, with cookies, Kool-Aid, and ice cream bars.
On the way back to Valentine, we drove over to Brownlee. From there we went another fifteen miles west to Red Mercure's ranch. He sells Kosch mower parts, so Dad bought a needed leather and a spring.
We stopped at the Buttercup Café for supper when we got back to Valentine. I had a hamburger steak and Pepsi.
We went on home, leaving Ken at his car. I grabbed a cookie and went to bed.
Doug took the day off to take another driver's test, which he failed again. Lloyd did some work around home—cleaning up tree branches, etc.
It sounds like Carole Day and Harry Leeper are getting hitched. Carole is only 16—one day older than me.
