My journal entry for Monday, July 15, 1968
I climbed out of bed at 6:30, more tired than usual, after a late night. We had breakfast and then started the day's work.
I took the rake back up north, via the "high telephone pole" gate, raking as I went. By the time I arrived at the stacker, Dad and Sandra came along in the pickup, so I took it back to my mower.
Bad luck followed me around all day. I had to rob our new mower of a pitman stick after completing just a few rounds of a new land. Just before dinner, a front hydraulic hose developed a bad leak, so I had to get a hose off the new outfit.
We came home for dinner and watched Art Linkletter. An escape artist was on the show. I read the rest of the noon hour.
In the afternoon, I finished the one land and then went in the east part of the meadow. Another pitman connection went bad, so I had to take the two bad pitman sticks and make one good one.
Mom brought out iced tea, but I was late getting there and got short changed. I had to drink hot water for the rest of the day.
The rest of the crew put up nine stacks today [about seven ton stacks]. Doug stacked them all, but had bad luck when one fell over.
After chores and supper, I tried to learn how to ride Sybil's unicycle. I can go about ten feet non-stop.
I think I'll sleep outside tonight, since it is so hot in the house.
