My journal entry for Saturday, July 6, 1968
I started using an alarm clock today, so piled out at 6:20. After breakfast, we left for the Leach Place. Dad, Doug, Lloyd, Sandra, Sybil, and I made up the crew. Doug and I rode in the back of the pickup.
When we got there we got in the horses. Uncle Stan and Ken showed up about that time, so we chatted awhile. Sandra rode Ribbon, and I climbed on Hawk Eye. We got the yearlings in to the branding corral. We forgot to bring down Lindane for spraying, so Dad and Sybil went to town to get some at Weber Equipment. Meanwhile, Sandra and I got in two more bunches. Then we sprayed these at both the branding corral and at the Webster Place.
The hired men—who had been tearing out fence on the east side of the school section—joined us for dinner. We ate under a shade tree.
After our meager lunch, Dad and Sybil did some more spraying. Sandra and I drove the yearling steers to a beat up set of corrals at the Myers Place. We sprayed them, loaded the two horses, re-hooked the trailer with the sprayer on, and headed for the Fuchser Place. As it was getting late—4:00—we took the hired men to help. The filled the sprayer using five gallon buckets. We lucked out and caught Penny and Jig in a fence corner, and then the rest of us drove the cattle into the corral. We sprayed them, getting done a little before dark. We ran through over 900 head of cattle today in four corrals.
Back at the Leach Place, we unloaded the horses. Hawk Eye got loose with his bridle on, so we had to recapture him. Then we got in four club calves and their mothers to bring home. We loaded them in a rickety chute. It caved clear in, but we managed to get them all loaded on the two pickups. I drove the four-wheeler, with Lloyd and Doug riding along. It only has one headlight, and it only works on dim.
When we got home and had supper, I didn't waste much time hitting the hay.
