My journal entry for Saturday, September 28, 1968

The three of us [Ken Moreland, Doug Ward, and me] awoke to the honking of Uncle Stan's pickup. [We were camping out at the Leach Place, to be ready to trail Stan Moreland's cattle home to his ranch the next day.] We routed out of bed and ate sandwiches and sweet rolls for breakfast.

It was dark, and the horses did not want to go into the corral very well. We had to wait for a little daylight to get them in. I saddled Hawk Eye.

Uncle Stan, Ken, Doug, Brad, and I rounded up the JO cattle north of our west meadow. Pastor Lloyd Phipps served as cook, bottle washer, and chuck wagon driver [in a pickup].

We headed the bunch in a northerly direction. The two Uncle Joys met us at Jamison's with John and his horse. Most of our cattle driving conversation was about the differences in school [Ken and I were going to GHS, and John was attending Bennett County High School in Martin.]

We ate dinner on the north side of the Niobrara and had a longer than usual noon hour. The last six miles of the cattle drive were on Highway 61. Grandma, Aunt Joy, and Deb preceded the drive in the car to alert oncoming traffic.

For a little excitement, Ked said he'd give me 50 cents if I rode a bull for ten seconds. I did, and the bull crow hopped just as the "whistle" blew. I fell off like a sack of potatoes, but collected the 50 cents anyway.

Also, we propped up a dead coyote and a horse's skull on the highway. We got to the JO about 5:30. Uncle Stan gave me half of a mule shoe and an old spade bit. He and I went down to the Leach Place after his black car.

Tonight, Mom and Dad went to the wedding reception for Andy and Shirley Rice of Tuthill.
