My journal entry for Thursday, January 18, 1968

The whole Moreland tribe overslept this morning. Mom and Dad must have both thought that the other one had set the clock. Whatever happened, the alarm didn't go off. Lloyd finally rang the doorbell at 6:45 and roused us all out.

Everyone really "flew to it" trying to get breakfast on. Since Mom was going to take Sybil to the doctor at Gordon, we really had to hurry as they were riding along to school with us. Sandra and I got off at school (not even getting there in time for band), and Mom took Nancy Jean out to Uncle Stan's place to let them baby-sit with her.

We practiced the play all morning and had dress rehearsal this afternoon. The grade school kids all came over and auditioned it for us. Since there was not time to get in the third act, we pulled a dirty trick on the little squirts. An announcement was given after the second act that if they wanted to find out the conclusion, they would have to come back tonight.

After school, Sandra and I went home with Ken and Deb. Ardith Burton had brought her kids in to a reading class, so she took us out. Ken and I goofed off, reading old catalogues and comparing prices with those nowadays. We had a good supper, and by that time, Mom and Sybil were back. Sybil's arm is reportedly coming along okay, and she is supposed to soak it twice a day for the next two weeks.

Tonight was the "big night" as far as the play is concerned. Ken and I took Uncle Stan's pickup to town, and the rest came later. Dad and Lloyd had to come in from home.

The play that we have been working on for about three months, "Here Comes Charlie," came off tonight. Things went along pretty smoothly, but we sort of had a late start (waiting [and hoping] for more people to show up). Ken sort of stole the whole show with his "Uncle Alec" part. The part was funny anyway, but it took Ken to really get it across to its fullest extent.

Five seniors and five sophomores made up the cast [there were no juniors this particular year. Bobby Glen Buckles and Linda Cady were in that class, but Bobby Glen finished out in Martin, and Linda started driving west to Gordon]. The seniors were Bill Marrs, Linda Goodwin, Vertrie McLane, Jan Smith, and Frances Oleske. The five sophomores acting in the paly were Ken Moreland, John Fairhead, Jeana Fairhead, Ernie Bennett, and me. The other sophomore class members were Shirley Micheel, Linda Morsett, Vonda Goodwin, Mary Robertson, and Carole Day, and they acted as stage hands. Mrs. Jess was the director.

After the play, the class presented Mrs. Jess with a token of appreciation, a flower pin (costing $4.00). When Shirley was showing us the pin this morning, Ken blurted out, "How much did that set us back?" Of course we all got a good laugh out of that.

After the play and refreshments, we came home. Lloyd and I took home the pickup, and the rest traveled in the car. It's midnight now, so I'd better hit the sack.
