My journal entry for Thursday, July 11, 1968
After breakfast, I went down to the shop and sharpened a sickle. Then Dad and I went to Gordon after parts, left there by Bridgeport Equipment.
On the way through town, Dad fixed an old straw hat with special tape at Weber Equipment. He then paid $500 to Glen LaHaye (the banker) on a big enterprise to keep the grocery store in town.
In Gordon, we got the parts at the Enco Station and then went up to West Brothers Barber Shop for haircuts. [Dad always preferred the "west" West, Orvis, and I liked the "east" West, Origen.] We got pop and punches at the S&S Store, and milk and ice cream bars at the Ideal Market.
We came home, changed clothes, and worked around the shop until dinner. Don Alum, from the Soil Conservation service, was a noon guest. He spent the afternoon checking fences at the Leach Place.
By the way, the JL gave us a stray dog. She is a young mongrel, with Collie dominating, and goes by the name of Rebel.
In the afternoon, I finished mowing a land in the south North Meadow and started another. The rake tractor conked out on the stacking crew, so Doug and I changed mower guards until it was ready to go.
We put up two stacks in the late afternoon—Doug stacked both. I raked, and the rest held their regular jobs. Sybil just "kicked around."
We quit at 7:00 and came home. We did chores, had supper, and spent the evening relaxing.
Dad went to Lodge (Masonic) at Martin. He went to a practice there last night (when he picked up the new dog). Don Chappell brought gas and diesel out last night.
