My journal entry for Tuesday, February 13, 1968

I very reluctantly crawled out of bed at 6:30. We had breakfast and performed all necessary chores to get ready for school.

We headed out the door at about the right time and arrived at school a little early. In chorus, we practiced the songs for the talent show.

We took a couple of five minute timings in typing, but class ended before we figured out our results. Geography was spent discussing the Far East. A short quiz for tomorrow was Geometry's only assignment. Dissecting worms was our entertainment during Biology. (I guess we didn't put in too rough a morning.)

For dinner, we had beef and noodles on mashed potatoes, buns, green onions, green beans, and "poor-man" cookies. I'm not too sure whether I dissected worms and ate noodles, or vice-versa. My noon hour was blown messing around.

We read Literature in English class. Mrs. Jess gave us a short assignment for tomorrow and an essay to be due on Thursday. I think mine will be a couple pages from this diary covering Saturday, January 6, 1968. That day didn't go too smoothly and it takes up three pages, so maybe it will serve the purpose. Ken's start on his essay promises to be very good. It is about a rancher (none in particular) and a typical day when everything goes wrong. It is all so truthful it almost brings tears to your eyes.

Mr. McKay took Mary Robertson and Linda Morsett driving in Driver's Ed, so the rest of us "studied." I caught up on my work and completed my geometric design for the big contest. It is not a "winner" by a long ways, so I am just hoping for a decent grade.

John and Shirley Micheel took the afternoon off and went with their mothers to Valentine, to take their drivers tests. John passed his, but I haven't heard how Shirley came out. John will probably start "painting the town red" (he's got a driver's license, a girl friend, and probably the use of his dad's car, so I guess that is about all it takes).

Basketball practice was devoted to going over new plays and in general, getting ready for tomorrow's game with the Merriman "town team. We are due for a "skunking."

Ken rode with me to Grandma's. She sliced each of us a generous helping of cake, so we ate it and talked awhile on current events. I picked up the girls downtown and we came on home, arriving at 5:45.

I changed clothes and went out to help the men finish with chores. Dad showed me the latest gate in the reworking over of the barn. We sorted some cows that have a good chance of calving tonight, and then came in for supper. Later, I read in a book 30 STORIES TO REMEMBER.
