My journal entry for Tuesday, January 16, 1968

I piled out of bed at 6:00 this morning and ate a hearty breakfast. Then I went out and helped Dad pull off a little hay to the cow bunch in the horse pasture. By then it was 7:00, so I had to skip right in and get ready for school.

We made it to school in plenty of time for chorus today, so we maybe need a "pat on the back." This morning was spent on practicing the play. Between my appearances, I did a Driver's Ed assignment, made a poster for the play, and wrote a short "welcome" to the new coach, Mr. Nelson, to be put into the school paper. To get a little information to put in this welcome, I had to have a personal interview with Mr. Nelson, which embarrassed the heck out of me.

Dinner consisted of Mr. McKay's favorite dish—chicken gravy on biscuits. During the noon hour and English class, we put up the stage props for the oncoming play. At 1:15, I headed downtown to Rhode's Red and White grocery store, where I purchased a small notebook. Then I meandered on down to the fire hall to a "Rancher's Workshop." My Science project is on cattle cake, nutrients, proteins, etc. so with a good word from Mr. Krotz [the Science teacher], Mr. Card [the superintendent] gave me permission to "cut classes" and take in this workshop. I learned a little bit, blew a buck [cost of the class], practiced my artwork [doodling on the pages of the notebook], and had a good snack, so I guess it was well worth my time and effort. I hope to be able to attend the next two sessions, also.

Mom, Sandra, and Nancy Jean went to Valentine to get Sandra's glasses, and Dad went to Martin for an REA [Rural Electric Association] meeting [Dad was a director for 25 years on the LaCreek REA board]. Since Grandma was gone, Sybil and I went out with Aunt Lois and her kids to the JL Ranch. I followed John around as he went about his chores, and looked on interestedly as he milked his "high-private" cow. Dad showed up to take us home, so Aunt Lois invited him in to supper. We had a delicious banquet and then headed for town, with John and Sarah coming along as passengers. We dropped them off at school, where they had a big ball game with Gordon. Dad, Sybil, and I proceeded on home. Mom, Sandra, and Nancy Jean beat us by a few minutes. Dad put the pickup away, and I carted in a few groceries. We compared the day's events and are now loafing.

Over the week-end, Jerry Bennett, whose dad works at Mrs. Bowring's, got run over by a loaded hay sled. He was riding behind his dad on the drawbar of the tractor, and got jolted off when the torque amplifier was shoved ahead. A front wheel of the sled went over his legs, but his dad got the outfit stopped before the back wheels reached him. Jerry came out very lucky, with only a few bruises to show for his efforts. He went sled riding in the afternoon.

A few Johnson jokes are going around. What is the difference between LSD and LBJ? LSD is a drug, and LBJ is a dope. What is the difference between Johnson and finishing nails? Neither has got a head.

Hey, Soap....did this Jerry Bennet train racehorses in later life? I knew a Jerry Bennet who came from up your way, trained racehorses, and was somewhat stove up due to arthritis. He had twin boys my age, and trained for a man here for several years.

No, the Jerry Bennett mentioned has been in this area for all of his life. He lives in Martin, South Dakota, and runs the Bennett County road crew (just coincidental on the name). He and I have matching missing ends from our left middle fingers, which we occasionally compare. At least these mishaps for both of us were in the line of duty and job-related. :-)

OK. Last I knew the Jerry Bennet I'm referring to was in Ruidoso (?), New Mexico and was running a water therapy (glorified swimming pool) clinic for horses. The name just made me curious.
