My journal entry for Tuesday, October 8, 1968
My alarm went off at 6:00. Mom fixed breakfast for Lloyd and me. Then she, Nancy Jean, and I got ready to go to Valentine.
We took off at 8:00, and first went over to the Weber Ranch. Bruce loaned us a show stick to use at the Stocker-Feeder Show. We journeyed on to Valentine in rainy weather.
Dad had gone out to Ralph May's by the time we arrived, so we went downtown. Ken and I went to Spec's Sporting Goods and to Young's Western Wear.
We went back down to the fairgrounds and looked after the calves. I ate dinner at the lunch stand.
The Future Rancher's 4-H Club had 27 calves to wash (this was the biggest club). We started at 1:00 and worked until almost 3:00. The gas water heater was acting up, and singed the hair of my calf "Chillingsworth." The leaking gas made everyone's eyes water, and I think everyone eventually got a headache out of the deal.
Mom, Dad, and the girls left for home. I stayed in Valentine with the JO bunch. We fed our calves, and then went down to the Buttercup Café for supper.
One more check was made on the calves before retiring for the night. We stayed at the Ballard Motel. Ken slept on the couch, Uncle Stan and Brad slept on one bed, and Mitch Burton and I on the other. Ken had a restless night and managed to jerk a curtain down, breaking the supporting rod.
