My journal entry for Wednesday, January 10, 1968

This morning I got up at 6:00, just in time to eat breakfast with the first crowd (the second bunch eats about 7:00). I "duded up" a shade to come to school, and then helped Dad start the pickup. We had to pull it with the tractor. Dad broke the trail with the four-wheeler, and I followed with the car. At the oil, Sandra and Sybil got in with me and we proceeded on to school.

After band, the sophomore class had a semester test in typing, followed by two more in Geography and Geometry. I lucked out with a "B" in typing, and I don't think I did too badly in the others. After dinner, we practiced the play during English and goofed off in Driver's Ed. This was followed by phys ed and finally school was out. As I headed out the door of the "halls of ivy," Mr. Card grabbed my arm and told me to come out to his car. He gave me a "belated" Christmas present which was a real nice plastic-covered World Atlas. I guess some guys like me have all the luck!

Sandra, Sybil, and I got in the car and headed downtown. As usual, I got the mail and the girls called home to find out if any groceries were needed. The roads were real bad as the wind had blown quite hard all day. Mom said for us to stay overnight at Grandma's place.

We drove back to Grandma's and I read awhile. Grandma needed some milk and pancake mix, so I walked down to the store and got some. We had supper at about 6:00.

Before supper, when Uncle Stan came after his "red-heads," he brought in an envelope with a few old catalogues. They were dated around 1940, and are quite interesting. One contained old horse-drawn haying equipment and was originally give out by Dick Lessert here in Merriman. Uncle Stan found these catalogues at Ralph Arnot's place. They are well-preserved and may someday be worth quite a little.

I forgot to mention it before, but Harry Johnson of Eli passed away the night before last. I didn't know him very well, but I do know he had the biggest and most healthy laugh of anyone in the country. You could pick him out in a pretty big crowd by listening to the loudest chuckle.

Dad and Mom just came to town in the four-wheeler. Mom had to come in to her college course on Music, held every Wednesday night. I think this is the last class of the season. Mom has really enjoyed it, and has learned quite a little about all types of music.

Mr. Tarsitano loaned me a pamphlet on early day Nebraska schools. I have been reading it, also a book entitled Buffalo Wallow, and I should be studying for semester tests, so I have plenty to do until bedtime.
