My journal entry for Wednesday, July 17, 1968

The day dawned with a good fresh smell. It rained about an inch and a half yesterday, so we didn't have to worry about haying.

We loaded up our tools and stuff, and went down to the Leach Place. At the buildings, we loaded Dad's and my saddles. We proceeded on to the Fuchser pastures.

Penny and Jig were in the northwest pasture. From there, we ran them into the horse pasture and on into the corral. Dad and I moved the cattle from the northeast pasture to the one south. Doug and Lloyd moved back-rubbers, salt bunks, etc.

At the gate between the pastures, we held the bunch. Dad and I roped probably about twenty calves altogether to be doctored for pink-eye.

We ate our lunch near the corral. A cow had a new calf and wasn't letting it suck, so we had to tie her up there.

We put out some salt and fly dope in the southeast pasture, and then went back to the Leach Place. There we started a new fence along the east side of the school section.

At about 6:00, our crew started for home. Lyle Nelson's from Martin were down for supper. Dad fried hamburgers outside, and we ate inside.

The skies broke loose with another half inch of rain, along with quite a wind storm. Not much chance of haying tomorrow morning anyway!

I barely stayed awake until the company left. Then I called it a day.
