My journal entry for Wednesday, July 24, 1968 (out of order)
Since we worked late last night, everyone slept an hour later this morning. We woke up to a cool damp morning—not much good for haying.
I got in the horses and caught Sassy. Then I got the cattle from the horse pasture into the corral. Dad helped me sort out three cows and their calves, and I took these to the pasture south of the meadow.
Today was the day of the district horse show in Gordon. I didn't go for various reasons—the biggest being that Sassy was not up to her usual output.
I employed Sandra and Sybil to help me pull down the stacker cart from "up on the hill." It had a flat tire, so Dad let me put on a new tire. I did some other repair work on it, and put on the double-tree with single-trees.
With Doug's help, I got down some harness. We caught Crackerjack and harnessed him up. Then I caught Spot, but the dinner bell rang before we could harness her. I left Crackerjack in all day.
After dinner, the hay was fairly well dried out. I started mowing after Dad laid out a land on the south side of the meadow. Some kind of brace broke on the rake, which put the stacking crew out of commission until Dad welded it. They got up three stacks in the latter part of the day.
Mom took Sybil to the clinic in Gordon. She has been having some inner ear trouble.
After chores were over, we had supper. I didn't have time to break the team.
We pulled a calf tonight. Then Dad went to town for a church finance meeting. Doug rode along with him for something to do.
I've been reading "The Fields of Home," by Ralph Moody.
