My journal entry for Wednesday, June 19, 1968
This was about a typical day, only if anything, it was rougher than usual. I staggered out of bed at 6:30 and devoured breakfast.
I had to get in an old cow with a new calf from the pasture south of the meadow, so loped out on Sassy (bareback). I about got piled when she took off like a ruptured catfish as I tried to jump on (the mosquitoes were bothering).
We picked up Doug as we went through town and got down to the Leach Place at 9:00. Lloyd and I fenced all morning, putting in a box corner, and straightening out an old fence line between the branding corral and the buildings.
Dad and Doug went to the Fuchser pasture to fix a windmill. They hauled Penny down, and doctored a calf. They didn't have the right well leathers, so had to go to Ned Fair's to borrow some.
They came back, and we reunited at 2:00 for a belated dinner. Lloyd and I strung wire around a tree lot all afternoon. Dad and Doug put in a few wire gates.
We started home at 7:00, and dropped Doug off in town to visit his grandparents. We ate supper first and then did chores. Another cow is in the "hospital bunch," as she won't let her calf suck.
I got a new "Western Horseman" so read a little while in it.
