My journal entry for Wednesday, November 27, 1968
I got up at around 6 o'clock, had breakfast, and headed for school. The girls didn't have to go today due to parent-teacher conferences.
We moseyed up to Gordon in the bus and waited around until school started. In Algebra II we had a quiz (I got 100%) and lucked out with no assignment over Thanksgiving. I read during study hall. We got our tests back in English and went over them. I got 91%. Ag was spent having class, and we once again talked about tractors. I managed to pass the FFA test from yesterday with 90%.
When noon rolled around, I ate my lunch and read until the 12:50 bell. We had the last of the panel discussions in History class, and found out we will have a big test on the Constitution next Tuesday. I studied for the rest of the school day.
Mom, Dad, and the girls picked me up at 3:30 in Merriman, and we took off for Benson, Minnesota—480 miles away. Our first stop was in Kadoka, where we had supper in a bowling alley. We made it to Pierre before Nancy Jean put up a fuss for something to drink. Because of poor service, it turned out we had over a 30 minute "milk break." Our next delay was in some small town to get gas. I drove from Watertown to Montevideo (80 miles), while Dad snoozed. Then we called Grandpa.
We arrived at our destination (my grandparent's farm) just at midnight our time or 1:00 a.m. Central Time. Grandma fixed a lunch, and we talked for an hour before retiring for what was left of the night. I walked about 50 yards and slept upstairs over at Uncle Al's.
