My journal entry for Wednesday, October 9, 1968

The alarm brought everyone to attention at 5:30. Our quintet went down to the fairgrounds and fed our calves before going to breakfast at the Buttercup Café.

Mom, Dad, and the rest of our bunch made it back to Valentine at 7:00. We led our calves around some and then trimmed them up a little with our electric clippers.

There were seven Moreland calves in Class X. Velvet Burton led my extra calf, and Mitch Burton led Sybil's other calf. Sybil's two were fourth and fifth (prime), and Ken's calf, Sandra's, Brad's, and my two were in the choice. Sandra's other calf was first prime in one class, so she showed for champion. Ken and I both showed again for showmanship and each got blue ribbons.

Mom went ahead and ordered a bunch of hamburgers for dinner. We had a little time for noon as the sale was late getting started.

My calves sold for: 490 pounds at 46 cents and 480 pounds at 34 cents. Sandra's were 450# @ 46 cents and 455# @ 35 cents. Sybil's were 455 @ 48 cents and 515# @ 32 cents. The champion belonged to Garrett Gale [probably an Angus], and it weighed 475 pounds and brought $1.11 per pound. It was not a very hot sale.

The fun part of the whole deal was cleaning up. We hauled out two loads of dirty straw and loaded up our equipment. Harry Stokely [the county agent] had us take down all the light bulbs, also.

We ate supper at the Buttercup and on the way home dropped off Gaskins' show box at Cody. We got home at 9:00.
