Question for MRJ:

Are you an active member of NCBA and/or you on one of their committees?

If you are an active member, could you please update us on the process it takes to become 1) an active member of a committee, 2) process a person has to go through to become President of NCBA.

I will preface the last question by the fact that I am personal friends of both the current and past President, having done business with both.

My experiences with both of these men has been a very professional and positive experience.

GLA, yes, I'm an active member of NCBA. I have served on committees, most recently as a committee chair for SDCattlemens Assoc.

I will have to check on the rules for the various entities. I know that the Federation of State Beef Councils has committee members and that some are from the Dues/Policy division on the Joint Committees, and there are committee members from the CBB on those as well.

I think any member may attend committee meetings and maybe even be a committee member. The last point I'm not sure of.

I'm also not certain of the procedure to become president. It seems that those who have been pres. have previously spent some years working through committees, etc. I do know there is a rigorous nominating committee process those wanting to serve as officers and on committees go through.

It is especially gratifying to hear of your experience with the Presidents. It bears out my personal feelings from seeing them in action through several years of attending conventions, and from visiting with them.

I want to verify what I think is correct in the process to be certain before I post. Please be patient, I'm in the middle, or hopefully the end, of a wicked sinus/bronchitis malady......and have some business away from home for a couple of days this week if I'm up to it, so don't expect anything more on this for a few days. Thanks for trusting me to do the research for you.

MRJ,

I will be patient. I am just curious as to how long it takes a President to finally work up thru the ranks.

Do the potential Presidents campaign hard for the office or is it more of taking your turn when the opportunity comes up? I know this is a stupid question, but how much is pure politics and how much is what you have done for the industry and/or NCBA?

Just for the record, I like Mike John, he seems very professional and from my dealings, has been very credible. He is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Comes from a very good family!

GlA, I think it is very heavy on work for the industry. I'm not sure about the politics. I do know that every officer has to go through the very rigorous nominating committee sessions to be nominated. I also know that there are usually more good candidates than there are slots for. Anyone can ask any question they want of any candidate for office in the nominating committee process. Since I have been interested, I've noticed that those who do come to the top have been working for the industry in various ways for a long time, for the most part. I know of some who decided they could not afford to do the job, so dropped out. It looks like as good a system as I've heard of.
