NCBA: Statement On FDA Proposed Rules For Cattle Feed

"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed today new measures to further strengthen its feed rule and help ensure the risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) remains low in the United States.

"These changes further enhance stringent BSE safeguards already in place and diligently enforced in the United States for the past two decades. The U.S. government, together with the cattle and beef industries, has worked to put in place a science-based, multi-firewall system that has proven to be successful in preventing the spread of BSE.

"In 1996, NCBA called for a voluntary ban on ruminant-derived protein in cattle feed, and requested action on the issue from FDA. In 1997, the FDA banned feeding cattle this type of protein, and reports a 99 percent compliance rate for the feed ban. Scientific experts around the world agree that the feed ban breaks the cycle of BSE and assures it will be eliminated.

"Since June 2004, USDA's Enhanced BSE Surveillance Program has tested 484,618 targeted animals at highest risk for BSE and has found only one confirmed case, evidence that our system is highly effective.

"As we begin to analyze FDA's proposed revisions, we must be sure they reflect what is needed to best protect the U.S. cattle herd. Anything other than a science-based approach will be harmful to cattle producers and offer no real benefit to consumers or our industry.

"The U.S. beef supply remains the safest in the world. As cattle producers, the health of our animals and the safety of our food supply are always top priority. We insist on science-based principles to determine the safety measures needed, and we fully support changes if they can offer additional assurance."

In other words NCBA is saying we have to ask the Packers what our stand should be   - and since this will effect the chicken raising factories profits they will come out opposing it....They definitely can't back the proposal, because that would mean R-CALF was right since they have asked for this for years- and NCBA , like SH.. could never admit that......

Well Old Timer, R-CULT said we have the safest beef in the world?

Was that another contradicting lie?

NCBA and R-CALF both said we had the safest beef in the world (along with many government officials). I guess R-CALF is lying - the rest are mistaken or simply don't know what they're talking about?

So does NCBA- are they lying ? I see now where FDA is cutting way back on their proposed rules change-- just another whitewash--Using best science available-- which for the last few years has meant if the big industry doesn't agree, get rid of the bureaucrat and find one who will agree with the science ........Tommy Thompson, now Crawford- 1/2 dozen USDA officials- how long will the next FDA guy last ? He definitely better not challenge or propose sound science that doesn't agree with the Big Bucks Machine.

NCBA didn't contradict themselves by saying that "USDA does not care about food safety" or "USDA has not gone far enough to assure the safety of our beef" one day then saying "we have the safest beef in the world" the next day the way R-CULT contradicted themselves.

There is no comparison.

R-CULT's position is whatever happens to fit their political agenda at that moment. Kinda like the Clinton administration.

NIi diversion from NCBA to RCALF. You must of been uncomfortable trying defending NCBA

Who is trying to defend NCBA? If I agree with them, I agree with them. If I don't, I don't. I'm not some mindless follower like you are to the gospel according to R-CULT. Nice diversion to R-CULT's flip flopping.

OT, your attempt to tell us what NCBA really "is saying" is just as lame as the media whiz kids telling us what Pres. GWB "really" meant after he says anything in public.

What NCBA has ALWAYS said re. BSE since before most critics had even heard of BSE, is that we want the best available science to be the guide in industry and government efforts to contain and eliminate that problem.

It is truly amazing and disgusting that you would twist and attempt to turn all the good work of NCBA on the BSE problem into some sort of conspiracy to help packers and/or USDA to harm the poor, downtrodden rancher.
