Need 7 cows to be adopted by a 5th grade class

I left my best 5th grade class. While talking to them about where the hamburger comes from most of the questions were about how the cow was killed, how did they cut it ect..... As I stood there I knew if we got in to that part before they saw the rest of the story they would leave with a bad feeling. SO I told them we were goign to follow a cow from birth to plate. I know it takes longer than 4 months but that is the time I have to do this project. I have broken them up into 7 groups ~each group has a cow.
What I am asking for is for someone or someones to let us "adopt" 7 cows. I would need pics of them as calves up to sale ...yes it can be 3 or 4 different cows. I want them to see every part. If your willing to email telling about thier day great. We would use my work email so I can open it and they can read it. I am also going to have them come here (rachers.net) to do research on the different topics that pertain to the cattel industry. Most times I can not see pics at work due to the firewall.
I am warning you these kids are sharp and very eager. They really have NO CLUE but want to learn. They will ask ALOT of questions and some are going to come across as dumb.
So if anyone is willing to help PLEASE let me know.

I think you are on the right track, however I wish to caution you about bringing all those kids to this site. I think the rule is you have to be 13 to sign on and if these kids want to sign on at home, it might not be the thing to do.

I think many would be glad to help, but everything on here is not for kids.

JMHO. Might be worth thinking over a little bit. You could download anything you needed. I think we'd appreciate that.
 
The pictures leadin up to calves goin to sale, yeah most of us could come up with those. Along with all the things we do to get them there. But afterwards, the feedlot situation on thru to the packer, and grocery store, we dont have pictures of that stuff, or I would say most of us don't. But I do know that schools have access to those kinds of films, from start to finish, because they've shown films in Amanda's ag class, all the way thru to the supermarket shelf. So maybe you could look into that, ask an ag teacher. Or an extention agent, I think they have educational videos for publics use. Our ag teacher keeps those films in his class room.
I agree with Faster horses on not lettin the kids on ranchers, since not everything on here is suited for kids. Print anything you want off of here that would help in your project, but to keep a bunch of kids from gettin on here, keep the website name out of it.
 
As a former teacher...have you given thought to what if any parent problems might arise and how'd you handle it?

Example.....one of you kids has vegan/veg parents and they don't want the kids exposed to the " cradle to the grave" aspect of the livestock biz....what do you do with that kid??

As soon as you don't think you might have parent " input"....you will...BIG TIME!!!

Thank yall for the help I am NOT going to show the "gorry" side just that they are butchered and what part is made into what piece of meat. Then how they get to supermarket.
As for the parent input you have to HAVE parents. As I said before 90% of these kids are in foster care and group homes. I have verified with the social worker and she said there is no problem. Admin is all for it since they walked in at the end and gave full approval.
As for the site I was goignt o walk them through it and show not let them loose to thier own accord. I am WELL aware of the ADULT content.
If someone wants to gather good articles ,yall would know better than I, and email them to me that would help.

The State of Maryland (4H) (FFA) (Agriculture) has very active up to date sites
 
MsSage, an idea that I have had for awhile that I am not sure if it has been done before or not is to have kids adopt a rancher instead of the cow. Then get the rancher to take pictures and email the kids on a regular basis with the pictures and a description of what their day is like and what happened that day. That way they can see everything from calving to the boring things like fence building. Other than that you should be able to get some ag based materials from your state farm bureau. Anyway thanks for listening to my 2cents worth and good luck.

I checked into the films NOPE CMS does not have any. Thats the problem with being a urban school ag is NOT in our vocabulary. Trying to get info from the 4H agent is like talking to a wall. If it was about fashion or photography they could help but livestock.........
Another issue is the places I have found dvds or vhs they are about $15-20 Sorry unless they are free I cant afford them. I am going to be using my photopaper and ink for the pics. I dont have anymore to put into buying supplies.
Yes the ranch jouran would be just what I am looking for to help with day to day. But I think some of the excitement is being able to talk to a "real rancher" ok its email BUT you have no clue how excited these kids get when adults want to talk to them.
I am going to get a picture of the class and send it to the ones who want to help. I know all the kids have returned the photo release form.

Go to cfbf.com, California Farm Bureau has a great Ag in the classroom program and they have program (can't spell cirreculum) set for each grade level. Notify the county farm burea in the county where she is at and they will get matching funds from CFBF to pay for the materials.

Your telling me old dog that CFBF will match funds to a school in North Carolina???????? OMGAWD I LOVE THAT ONE. I am having a hard time getting through on the phone to the NC Farm Bureau. I emailed them about 4 months ago asking for materials that pertain to Ag in the classroom. I never got a response I use both home & work email.
I would love to get some to come and talk or read. I need to get the info about hwta they need to fill out...yes volunteers have to be checked out. Not sure if one time they do but I know if they work with students weekly they do. Lets NOT get on that.

I will be sending out pics of the teams and which cows they each have this weekend. The kids have been asking everytime they see in the hall do we have a cow yet LOL too funny.
Yes Kolan I have photo releases and since only those whom wished to email them will know thier name and if I do say a name it will only be first.
Its really cool to hear the other classes talk about this class getting cows.
