Hi everyone...since so many of our Ranchers.net family are dealing with shortage of pasture and/or hay, I thought I'd post some tools that might help.

North Dakota State University Extension Service has a great "Feed List" in which you can post feed you have, either pasture or hay, or else post if you need pasture or hay. In the past droughts it's been a very good tool for the "haves and have nots." I expect it will be no different this go either.

Here is the link:

Also, I know of a young couple, Weston and Teresa Dvorak, who are just finishing their feedlot north of Dickinson ND, and are willing to take in cows. They are hoping they will be able to graze, but should it turn dry there too, they'd also be willing to dry lot. I'm no fan of sending cows out, and especially not fond of drylotting, but this couple run a first class operation, with tremendous cleanliness, herd health, great husbandry, management, and nutrition, so I'm glad to recommend them. In visiting with Weston on Thursday it sounded like they were offering to take cattle in very reasonably. If we have to send cows out, they'll be at the top of our list.

PM me if you'd be interested in their services, and I'll provide their phone number.

I hope these help, and I hope everyone keeps their chins up. We are doing our best to do so.

Remember, it will rain....someday!

That was a very nice thing to do, TTB.

I'm not suprised that you did it, however!

I had to come in from hauling this morning. My allergies just wouldn't
let me continue. We have a good friend from town that came out to spell me off. So I'm in here getting a nice (hopefully) dinner for them.

Thank you :D You're a peach! If I've helped one person, it's been all worth it!

I can't hay (when we have hay) or fight fire because of allergies and asthma, so I completely sympathize for you. I'm glad you have some friends to pitch in and help!

Too bad we're so far from most of you. We've got pasture for 100 yearlings/60 pairs that we're not even going to get to this year. It's not much, but for someone in a drought it's 100 yearlings/60 pairs that don't have to be sold.

We can't find anyone to rent it since everyone for 100 miles has grass.

Thanks TTB. It is a little too far for me but I am sure there is someone on this board that it will help. This drought is going to be remembered for a good while. Three of the last four days we have had fires within 30 miles. Plumb scared to do much of any thing.

WB...

I'm not sure where you're located, I think in North Central South Dakota. If you look on the Feedlist home page, there are links to other state's Feedlists. Those are listed in the bottom left hand corner. For us, the feed available in North Dakota is in most cases closer than the feed located in South Dakota. For you, it might be different, and feed located in Minnesota or Nebraska might be closer too.

Dependent upon where you are, I've heard that there is quite a bit of hay, pasture, and folks willing to take in cattle around Jamestown ND. The Dickinson/Killdeer area is closer for us than Jamestown. As well, I know of several operations in the Sisseton and Watertown areas that are willing to take in cows. If you are interested please PM me, and I'll be more than happy to give their names.

We too have fires very close...in the past week, we've had at least three on our place, with the worst thus far taking most of our stockpiled grass that we turn into in the fall. This morning I think most of Northwestern South Dakota is on fire. I know several of big fires between us (northwest of Timber Lake) and the SD/WY/MT/ND border. You are correct this will be a year to remember (or maybe forget  ) but it sure makes us thankful for what we have. It will get better!!!

Cheers---
