There was a bull around 15 years or so ago would throw calves that looked almost Tarentaise at birth but would be jet black by fall.
 
We get Gelbvieh cross calves which look like that at birth, but are completely black by fall. I'll try and post a pic of a heifer who's just turning dark now.

When the first crop of these calves came, I really wondered what I had done, :shock:. I even recorded them as red at birth. By fall they were all solid black.
 
I have been aware of wild type gene carrier satus for a number of years from my experience with color gene testing through the Canadian Angus Association in my efforts to determine red carrier status on some of my calves. From this my understanding is that "wild type" type color gene carriers are all black hided animals.

I am going to request and post the CAA color gene fact sheet for what it is worth.
