New bulls and some calves

The first one is of Cole creek breeding. The last picture is a Shoshone bull.

Larry said "Nobody wants my bulls, but everybody wants my cows". How is Larry? I'd take his bulls any day and everyday.

I like both bulls- but especially the top one... Do you have a registration number or can you tell me the breeding behind him...

I wish Larry had not stopped registering his cattle...

Larry was great to do business with. I asked if the bull would work on heifers and he said it probably would but said its birth weight was just the average of his herd. The first bull is out of a son of Black Cedar and a Horse Butte Encore cow.

Thanks... That is what I was thinking- that bull has a "Cedar" look... They make some great cows...

That's what I hope these bulls produce. Good daughters. I've chased the epd numbers long enough. That's why Mr. Leonhardt made a lot of sense to me. The mother cow should be the main focus of a cow calf producer. I agree with his assessment of the current angus industry. They are pretty much all composite animals.

He, without a doubt, knows more about Angus genetics than anyone in the USA. He told us once, that the only outside influence cattle he would use in his herd was Cedar Hills...John Hamilton, owner of GDAR 054. That bull produced some excellent females.

You'll like what the bulls from Larry do for you. We started using his bulls way back when. The education you get from him is second to none. He's very interesting. Did he tell you, "I'm just a dirty little beet farmer"?

I agree with everything you said FH. I consider it an honor to be able to visit with Mr. Leonhardt. And like he said, in five years I'll know if the bull I got from him is any good.

Interestingly the sire to Black Cedar 46P is the original "Cedar" bull C H (Cedar Hills) Quantum 6247 who goes back to Dixie Erica of C H 6180 and her dam Dixie Erica of C H 1019... Dixie Erica of C H 1019 is the dam to OCC Emblazon 845E and "the" foundation cow in the Ohlde herd...
One of the former owners of the old "Cedar" bull once told me that in his opinion Dixie Erica of C H 6180 was the better maternal producing dam..

We have a half dozen or so cows that are daughters or granddaughters of HBR Encore or his sire Shoshone Encore 6310-which we have had good luck with- so I don't think Ho55 will be disappointed with either of his bulls..

I think the first 'Encore' bull came from Larry breeding the mother back to the son. :???: As I said, he knows more about Angus genetics than most anyone, so he knew what he was doing. He got tired of the 'performance train' in 1979, so got off at the station. :D :P His cattle are very predictable in their genetics. He doesn't worry about EPD's or such. He said that if you go to a good bunch of cattle and buy the middle, you will get the same genetics as the outliers, which never breed back to themselves anyway. He knows.......he said he bought high-gaining bulls at the test stations for years.......and they never bred back to themselves. They did about breed his cattle out of milk, hence, Shearbrook Shoshone came on the scene. SS was the no. 1 milk bull in the breed for a long time, but along with that came some udder problems.

He used to not sell yearling bulls as he didn't like to feed them hard., Don't know if that still holds true. He had a whole pasture full of 2-year olds the times we were there and they were like peas in a pod.

Larry did say that Cole Creek cattle are good. And that Greg Golden is as good as breeder as there is. Has anyone ever tried the Horse Butte 6141 bull? He looks like a helluva bull to me. I'm going to AI a few heifers to him this spring.

I haven't used him yet- but he does look like quite the bull...And has quite cow making history in his pedigree..

I believe he would have said that as that is the truth. We were there quite a few moons ago.

Here's some fun reading for you:

I'll have to have my wife get on the Facebook and look that up. I got five straws on him. Hope I can get some settled to him.
