Cummins has revealed additional details about its upcoming diesel engine, recently announced as an option for the next generation Nissan Titan half-ton pickup.

The all-new 5.0 liter V8 will be available to other automakers, as well, and was designed to fit in practically any truck engineered to accommodate a V8 or V10 engine.

Several versions will be offered ranging from 200 hp to 275 hp with a maximum of 560 lb-ft of torque.

The ISV5.0 features a compacted graphite iron block, aluminum alloy heads, composite valve covers and dual overhead cams for reduced weight and smooth operation, according to Cummins, along with a variable geometry turbocharger, high-flow fuel filter and extensive exhaust treatment system that includes exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filter. The company says it will improve fuel economy between 20 to 40 percent compared to gasoline engines, depending on its application.

While no other automakers have yet announced plans to use it, Cummins suggests it could be an option for school buses, motorhomes and delivery vehicles, as well as other pickups.

Ram currently offers a 6.7-liter inline-6-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel in its heavy duty pickups, but is selling a light duty Ram 1500 with a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft.

Production of the new engine begins in Columbus, Ind., at the end of 2014. Nissan has not yet confirmed when the new Nissan Titan will go on sale, but it is expected to be introduced for the 2015 model year.

There hasn't been a good V8 diesel made that i can remember. :?

Well except for a Screamin' Jimmy. :D maybe
2004 Duramax almost 300,000 miles crew cab long box and we still get 25 MPG, plus it handles the 5th wheel ok here in the mountains

There is something to be said for the inline engines with a main bearing between every piston rod. Makes for a sturdy power plant.

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Keep seeing adds for this gal putting diesel in her car and everybody telling her no but her car has a Diesel engine. I don't know why either. I bet the first time somebody gells one up in the city because they didn't put anything in the fuel for winter they might look for something else.

I guess I fail to see why anyone would want one in a small pickup, since diesel is so much higher than gasoline. But what do I know???

I have gas engine's in both of my pickups for that reason and the fact of cheaper maintenance I don't haul cattle very far 12 miles at most and that's from the farm to the salebarn or scaleyard. One time a year I haul cattle 500 miles and that doesn't justify a diesel for my operation that and those new gas pickups are so quiet. And my wife doesn't like the smell and she's a major A$$et to this operation.

For a work pickup that has a flatbed on it. Diesel is cheaper to run than gas. Even with the price as of now. As most gas pickups that are weighted down don't get even close to what the window sticker says for mileage. Then when you do have to pull something with the diesel you can. They do cost more to buy, but when working just as hard as the gas will last a lot longer.

cummin's should research the old suburu engines that had different alloys for block and heads and all the problems.
