new heifer owner.....i need help

i was going to take pictures this weekend but a very good friend of mines house burnt to the ground over the weekend so i go a lil sidetracked. i took her and got her trimmed....lil different from a horse thats for sure.
she ran me over today. but when she figured out i was under there she stopped. gotta have the positive thinking. im starting to think that maybe she isnt going to be ready for that show. she was running toward the other cows. she must be lonely cause ive just got her and she is away from all the other animals really. she got into the big pasture today. that was fun trying to get her caught. my uncle has his stupid f-ing mules turned out and they ran her all over the place....grrrr its like 20 degress here. that cant be good for her. also they kicked her in the head and were biting her sides. i threw rocks at them. lol it worked really well. i hate mules.
 
she is not lonely. She has figured out that she can out power you. That is a very bad thing. Use anything you can to teach her that she cannot get away on you including the tricks ACS indicated. You must not let her get away on you or else you will never show her. Some people use mules or donkeys to teach them how to lead. If you have the mules available
I am sure someone on ranchers will tell you how to use them.

I have to admit I am getting kind of confused picturing exactly what is wrong with this calf. Maybe she is just a wild one. Or maybe getting loose or running to free could be her problem. You mentioned the mules got her, do you turn her out in a big field with Mules?

If I am picturing the metal halter talked about above we have tried them when they will not move at all. Puts some pressure above the nose to get them to move. But it sounds like the problem you are having is after she moves she runs over you. Not sure the metal halter will give you any more control it mostly helps stubbornness.

Maybe she is a wild maverick and you should consider not showing her before you get hurt? Or maybe you can find someone that you can take her to for a week to work with her. Did you buy her from someone that might help you work with her? Last steer we bought, I had a question on the calves gentleness and the guy told me if we had problem bring him back for a week or so and he will get him right.
 
Like elwapo said she knows she can overpower you,thats the biggest part of your problam.Does your ag teacher raise cattle? If that halters available to you try it...sweetie you don't have alot of time left,its worth a try,same with the mules or the tractor.
 
really when she walks well she really walks well. but when she doesnt she just tried to run off. i have been having better luck getting her stopped. no i dont turn her out with the mules i hate them and they are mean to other animals. my cousin didnt close the gate when he came though it and she got into the other field. no my ag teacher doesnt breed cows. the guy i bought her from lives about 2 1/2 hours away.im not really sure what to do. i dont think she will hurt me, not bad enough to not show her. ive been though at lot worse breakin horses.
 
WOW! she did so good today. better than she has every done. she walked nice and she wasnt just walking in a circle she was listening to me. it felt really good to beable to get on here and share some good new with you guys. i have pics to i just have to re size them.

I was looking at the pictures you posted...Looks like a nice heifer- probably just going to take some patience...

But that is definitely a "PINK" coat you have.....If you wear that when you are showing noone will even notice the heifer..... :wink: :lol: :lol:
 
thats what i am going for. lol naaa i wont wear the coat put i barrel race so i will have a hard time finding a plan enough shirt to show in.

what is appropate to show in. i alway have everything starched...is that ok or will that be too much?

My kids always showed in nice light colored or white long sleeved western shirts- nice blue or black jeans- boots, and hat... They usually wore a "cowboy" type bow tie ......Don't need anything fancy or expensive- just clean, pressed, and western.......
 
i have nice lighter colored shirts. not all of them are crazy. thats good to know. i prolly wont wear my hat cause i paid big $$ for it. it gets enough of a beating at the horse shows.

Nice looking heifer...both of you :P She looks quiet enough by how she stands for the pics...I don't think your going to have any problams :) Other then the calf showing addiction,really no cure for that :P Good Luck young lady!
 
She is very cute and looks like shes bonded with you...once in the ring she will follow you like a puppy,I'm sure of it :nod:
 
well she is a lot smaller than the other cows we showed against and the judge didnt like her very much but she walked sooo freakin good in the show pen lol i was sooo worried she wouldnt after she ran away in the parking lot and ran me into a purple mini van lol so much for all that fitting. she fell on the ice like 4 times and i thought she was gonna break her leg. lol but she didnt calvin the boy i bought her from saved the day when he jumped over this huge rock and grabed her lead rope lol. we will get them next time.
