Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to start but I'm new
I was just wondering if any of you know the Northeastern part of New Mexico? We are looking at buying a ranch in that area (Colfax County) and just trying to get more info. We run cattle in the CA. desert and are going broke buying hay not to mention everything else CA. charges for. We have tons of water here to irrigate with but we can't afford the power bills any longer.
Does anyone know that area? Off the 25, Wagon mound, Springer or Maxwell area? Was is the grass like? How many months of grazing do you get?
I know it's hard to answer some of these questions without more specifics just looking for some opinions if anyone knows anything.
We are taking a trip out that way in August to look at a few places. I can't wait. It has been so hot here and I could not tell you when it rained last
Anyhow, I'm glad I stumbled upon this site, You all seem to be very nice and I look forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome aboard NMbound.

While I don't have a good working knowledge of the Springer NM area, I have travelled through the area a lot. In my mind, it seems it should be one of those places on the "Top 10 List of Places to Run Cattle." It just looks like good cattle country to me.

My folks ranch in SW Colorado/NW New Mexico, where a "native" is a Californian activist (like the one's you're trying to ditch!) that has lived there 5 years, and ruined California, and now are working on ruining the intermountain West.

I told Mom & Dad some years ago, maybe 10 or so, that the next guy who drives in and wants to buy your place, sell it, and move to Springer, New Mexico. I don't even think they heard what I said    But then again, it is hard to leave what you've worked a whole lifetime to own too

Remember to contribute to the board...I bet you have a lot you could add!!!

Good luck in your hunt for a new home...

Cheers---

TTB

Thank You for the warm welcome!

We have been trying to get out of this state for years. It just seems like now is the time to do it.

We have family in Monument CO. and every time we drive through the Springer ,Maxwell area we say how we would love to live in that area.

We are hoping and praying this will all work out for us.

Thanks again for the Welcome :D

Howdy, and welcome!

I was born in Clayton, but we moved back to my dad's old home ranch when I was 2.......so I remember next to nothing about that part of the state. I haven't ever gone back over there.

Maybe one of the guys from up there can fill ya in.

Fire away NMBound, I will do my best to answer some of your questions and if I dont donw I will point you in the direction of someone that can. My family has been in the area you are looking at for a long time. By the way welcome to the board.

welcome
i know some folks that ranch in that area
we lived just across the colorado line from there

any how i'll try to answer some of your ?'s
i think most of those folks don't have to feed hay unless the snow gets deep and stays for a week or so but that doesn't happen real often
for the most part the folks i know there feed a little cake or lick tubs for protien in the winter

some of those small mountains in that area are good for cows as the lava rock gets them foot sore
so on those area they run yearlings and do real well with the gain on them "3 lbs per day" on the ones we put over there

when you get over there look up preston wood at maxwell
he ranches all over that area
he also raises some real nice qh's
and makes custom boots .that are top of the line
not to metion just being an all around great guy

i also have some other other friends over south of capulin that have a ranch down there and they have been talking about selling and adding to the home ranch in colorado
again welcome
jerry

WOW Thank you all sooo much! I am so excited to find people who actually know about that area. Now I will drive you all crazy with questions. You will be telling me to "Go away woman"! :D
The place we really like is between Springer and Maxwell. Approx. 800 acres. I am so looking forward to grass!! I'm sure the cattle are too :P
We will only be bringing about 30 head with us. We have been doing some heavy culling for the move. We won't be bringing any horses, nothing worth bringing so I will have to look your friend up. We will be needing some good cow ponies!
I have been trying to find websites about the area but I guess that's just not something they worry about there. Which is OK with me I just haven't been able to get alot of info.
I tried to look up the Springer schools, I guess they don't have a web page either. I have Grandkids that will be coming with us. They are pretty involved in 4-H so I need to find a club there too. We are going to check out the Colfax county fair while we are there in August.
Would the closest shopping be Raton for Groceries? And Trinidad for bigger shopping? We live about 30 miles from town now so we know how to drive to shop
The kids want me to ask what kind of wildlife there is in the area. Here we only have coyotes, snakes and lizzards! They want to see things like racoons and antelope! (silly question I know, but they made me ask)
If we do need hay where would we buy it? The show animals eat out of a bag so are there feed stores in the area?
The only thing that scares me is the snow   I have only driven in it once and I slid into a tree with Hubbys Brand new pickup on a trip to CO. I swore I would never drive in that white stuff again! He says I'll learn. I am looking forward to snow though.
I'll hush for now, but anything you all want to tell me about the area is greatly appreciated!
Thanks Again to all of you

hello again
as for shopping raton has some but they have a walmart over the hill in trinidadand not much more
when we lived at trinidad we went to peublo or colorado springs to shop

from spinger it might be just as close to go to albaquarcay(sp????)
but i'm not shure
as for wildlife
rattle snakes, badgers, coyote's,antelope, deer and elk depending on exactly where you go
i'm shure i missed some critters but that's what comes to mind
ohhh yea and wolves
i'll bet before long
but don't worry about them as ted turner has a ranch there and he said they can eat all the bison they want on his place
i bet the folks south of there wish someone would tell the wolves that

feed stores
i'm shure there are some in each of those towns there
but if you want somthing special go to marty feeds in trinidad and they can wix it and sell it bulk or bag it for you also

preston will be a great guy to know out there and he can shure fix you up with some nice broke horses or some nice colts also
hope this helps
jerry

oops
hay
they bale alot of hay around trinidad and i can give you some names and numbers of some folks that can help out when the time comes
until later

The schools in Springer and Maxwell are both pretty good, I dont know that either one has a web site but I will try to find out for you. The area you are looking at is known as French Track. As Jerry suggested Preston Wood is a great source of information.

What animals do your grandkids show? As for the county fair come on by and introduce yourselves. I promise to slow down and talk with you for few minutes. I am the board treasurer, in charge of the sheep, goats, and for the moment the horse show as well. The fair is free admisson for Wed, Thurs, and Fri morning. Then Friday afternoon and Saturday we charge admission for the rodeo's and both nights there are dances. Saturday night is also the JR Livestock sale.

As for the shopping Springer has a small grocery store that keeps the very basic staples on hand and a feed store as well. Raton has a fair grocery store, KMart, a couple discount chain stores, a good western wear store, some chain clothing stores, and a feed store.

Trinidad has Walmart and a bigger Farm/Ranch feed and supply store. Between the two towns you can find most anything and if that doesnt work it just a couple hours on the interstate in either direction to bigger towns with more shopping and big chain retailers.

Wildlife is as Jerry said very diverse and always interesting, lots of hunting and fishing opportunities. Along with the critters Jerry mentions there are eagles, hawks, owls, Turners Buffalo, deer, elk, turkey, bears and the odd cat.

There are lots of people in Springer, Maxwell, Cimarron and Miami area that raise hay. As long as the year is not too dry hay is usually easy to find around here.

As for the white stuff you get used to it and the road crews here get the roads cleaned up pretty quick, and as Jerry said it usually doesnt stick around too long.

Hope this helps if there is anything else just fire away.

Good Morning!
You guys are great. If everyone in New Mexico is as helpful as you are I am sooooo ready to go  Except for the snakes  If I find one more sidewinder on my porch I am going to SPIT.
We aren't big Hunters but LOVE to fish. I have one Grandson that has loved it since he was a baby. I bet once we get there though, hunting will be a new hobby.
The kids show steers, market and Dairy goats, pigs and sometimes a chicken or two. It looks like feed is not a problem to get so I feel better about that. I will definately look for you at the fair! Thank You.
If you find any info for the schools that would be great! I did find out that the classes are very small. Here one of the grandkids was in a class of 36 to 1 teacher. Trust me that is really BAD.
Is there any costco's or sams clubs around there? We always have meat in the freezers but it's the other stuff I like to stock up on. I am not a shopping kind of girl so I like to do it all for like a month at a time.
What about medical services? I think I read about a clinic or something like that in Springer. Bigger stuff I'm sure you have to go to a bigger city right?
What about Vets. We can't get a large animal vet here to deal with cattle. Horses yes but not cattle. We have to load them in the trailer and take them about 150 miles for anything we can't take care of ourselves. I think I saw there is a small animal vet in Raton for like the dogs. Which reminds me is there fleas and ticks there? We don't have a problem with them here it is too dry and hot.
OK one more question then I'll leave you all alone for awhile
What do I need to do to get all these animals into New Mexico? Who do I contact to find out what I need. I know all states are different so I'm not sure who to contact. We will be bringing cows, calves and goats. And 2 Bulls.
I'm done I promise :P
Thanks again for everything you guys are wonderful!!!

State Regulations for New Mexico - here's a website that lists all the required information before you move animals into the state, and phone numbers to call to get the forms needed, and or, what you need to have upon entry. Hope this helps :D And welcome to the boards.

Yes there are fleas and ticks....do a google search for fleas and ticks in New Mexico and it might give you an idea of what you'll hafta do to treat your dogs and cats.

When you get down to deciding where you want to land
I have friends (and a few relatives) that ranch at Raton, DesMoines, Springer and Clayton and if I think long enough probably Roy and Wagonmound too --Also have a friend with a place (farm for hay etc) at Maxwell and then he runs summer yearlings on the mesas at Raton.

You get more winter up in that part of the state than you do south of I-40 --
lots of yearlings run in that part of the state because of the seasonal weather.

There are doctors and a small hospital in Raton --anything bigger you go to Pueblo, Colorado (2 hours from Raton) --
At least one good vet that I know of in Raton...large and small animal --

The usual care for ticks and fleas --nothing extraordinary.
In Raton you have a bigger problem with bears :)

NMBound you will still get a few snakes. So far I have not been able to find out if either school has a web site. As for the fishing your Grandson is going to be in hog heaven. There is one lake near Springer, several around Maxwell, then there is Cimarron Canyon and Eagle Nest Lake, all good fishing holes.

Vet there are two in Raton both have mixed practices and both will travel if need be. Yes we have fleas and ticks but they are not too bad.

Medical services, are alot harder to get, Springer has a clinic and a couple of the doctors from Raton travel to Springer once a month. Raton has a couple of different pratices that have several doctors but they are short on people and so new patients have a bit of a wait. Hospital wise they are building a brand new hospital that should be open pretty quick. Most times if specialists are need you end up heading south to either Santa fe or Albuquerque.

The nearest sams club are a couple hours drive either north to Publeo Co or south to Santa Fe. Cost Co is in Albuquerque.

As for bringing in the livestock the best place to start is the New Mexico Livestock Board. They control all movement in and out of the state and between the different districts in the state. Here is the web address http://www.newmexicolivestockboard.com/ You should be able to find what you need here and if not then you should be able to email them and get any answers you need. One thing to think about is that NM is a brand state and you will have to get a brand if you dont have one and if you do have one you will have to work with livestock board to make sure you can use it here.

AGAIN.. Thank You all so much! You all have helped me more than you will ever know.
I was worried about the fleas and ticks because I have 2 sissy La La dogs who stay in the house most of the time and I don't want hitchhikers in the house :) I'll just take them to the vet here before we leave and get the stuff to keep them off.
I guess we will have to load them all up and take a road trip to the vet to get everyone tested before we move. Oh well it will all be so worth it once we are in NM.
The in laws are making a trip from CO. to that area this weekend to take a look at some places and we might make an offer then if they think it's wise. Gosh I hope it's wise   It was 117 here yesterday and supposed to be hotter the next 2 days.
Yes we have a brand. Everyone is branded except the new calves, so I will call the livestock board today to see what I need to do.
I need to go do chores You all have a Happy Day!!!

If hauling through Arizona, it might pay to give them a call as well on what their health reqirements are. They used to be real fussy getting horses in state.
