I know this is a broad topic, and with there being 173 pages in the "ranch talk" forum, I hope I didn't miss this topic and am being redundant. I would appreciate any help and am open to any suggestions.

I have never farmed or ranched a day in my life. I have worked on some family farms growing up, but as far as making it my life, I'm lacking am completely ignorant to the trade. However, this is something I want to get into. I moved to WY 4 years ago, and simply fell in love with the ranching country, and want to buy land and ranch for myself. I am about 3-5 years from making this dream happen.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to start? I have so many questions. Is the best thing for me to land some jobs on various ranches? Is that the best way to learn the trade? It is an overwhelming topic, but it is something I will do one day, and want to do it right.

Thanks to everyone and anyone who reads this.

Without your financial status, answers will be vauge so..........................Start small, stay outa debt.
good luck

Every area of the country is different, every ranch is different. Everybody does things a little different.
If you have the time and money, the best way to learn is the school of hard knocks!
If you don't have the time and money, not sure you're gonna make it!

Seriously, you've come to the right place! Everybody on here is an expert rancher, just ask 'em!

Good Luck!

Welcome!!!

As was stated, STAY OUT OF DEBT!!!!

Perhaps ask the Lord if this is what he wants you to do.

Start off small like I did, that way your mistakes will be less expensive;)

Find someone willing to mentor you.

Have some faith in yourself.

Good Luck.

I on a board that is working on a young rancher program to help get a few started.... seem the basic rule is how much money do you need , say $50,000 a year then you need a place that run 500 cows, $70,000 then 700 cows , number pretty well worked out that way for Wyoming.
