Went to the cow sale this morning and calf prices were so depressing there- I decided to go up and check on cows and see what I had for stubble left to graze...Took the new pocket size camera Grandma got me and was trying it out...

This and the next picture are of a heifer that will never make it out of the 4 frame category- out of the double bred 6807 bull I had, and a little hereford cow- and her first calf...This is the one that if I had my druthers, I'd love to have 200 of- and as much as she hates dogs- I guarantee no coyote will ever get her calf...

Same heifer with her 600+ lb March steer calf

The WCR Floret 749T # 15802668 ( Cole Creek Track Hunter 60R) yearling daughter I got from Whitney Creek Ranch- Taylor...In comparing her with some of my home raised heifers- I don't think she will be more than a 4 frame cow....

Altho several of you have accused me of losing my mind- this is to prove that after a foot of snow- and single digit temps-- we have dandelions blossoming and going to seed...

Good looking cattle, Oldtimer. The market is not too perky, that is for sure. We sold the light end of the heifer calves today. Our plan is to keep the biggest and best two-thirds of the heifer calves through the winter and breed them next summer. We still have the light end of our steer calves, which will sell fairly soon. The steer market today seemed better accordingly than the heifers. Our light heifers today averaged 486 pounds at $102.16 per cwt, and this included getting rid of all the tail-enders and orphans, too.

You couldn't get a heifer of any weight up here over $1- most in the $.80 range... I didn't see it but heard one bunch of preconditioned nice 580 weight black steers went over $1.00 ($1.03) and some I talked to said it got worse this afternoon..
Few buyers on the seats and they had quite a few calves today...A lot of folks coming off BLM pasture ( off by Nov.1) don't have any contracts this year- and nowhere to go with their calves but the salesyards....

Same story out here. Guys still on the mountain without contracts are being offered .94 tops on 550 to 600 weights. Others who contracted early got 1.12 for the same weights. Salebarn buyers are sitting on their hands a lot and being picky about which bunch to buy. But with hay still awful pricey, it's tough for most to lot their calves and wait it out.
