Man, that's a huge collar for a little guy. I'm surprised he can hold
his head up...

Where did the red calves in the 'polka dot' photo come from?

How was the sale?

Feels good to get that fall work done, doesn't it?
Beautiful day here today, but they say it's gonna change.
Darn! We haven't had many nice days in October.

Thanks for the pictures, Soap. Hope your preg checking turns out
good!

hard to believe now, but soon that collar will probably be to small. we got a new pup a little more than a month ago, and she is almost half of a dog aready, they grow fast.

how old is your Priefert chute? i bought one about a year ago. from looking at your pics i see several things different between the two. i have been satisified with ours so far.

They are ours. We have 26 red calves that were born to black cows.

Fairly good for the times. Our lightest steer calves sold yesterday, and they averaged 514# @ $110.17 per cwt. This included some no-eared calves and other various derelicts, so I was happy.

We won't know for quite awhile yet. :?

We need to start sorting heifers tomorrow, separating keeping heifers from selling heifers. It's supposed to get up to 58 degrees, so should be a nice Saturday.

It's probably eight or ten years old. We have another Priefert chute at a different location that is a couple years newer. We like them both very well, and the company is a good outfit to do business with.

that's one bunch BEHIND you. That's gotta feel good!

If we were closer, I'd try and buy the red heifers from you...

We have done three bunches of cows now. Our results haven't been the best, averaging about 10 percent open. Not sure why. We are keeping all the young open cows to breed for fall calving next year. This has worked well for us in the past. Usually there are a few late spring calves that come along as pleasant surprises, and the fall bred cows find a ready market in June. This past year they sold for $990 per head; the year before was $1200; and the year before that was $1300.

The red replacement quality heifer calves were hot property at the Valentine Livestock Auction yesterday. Several of those kind were sold by the head instead of by the pound. The best sale was Red Angus heifer calves from the Long Valley, SD country. They weighed 612 pounds and brought $740 per head. This calculates out to just under $121.00 per cwt. Other by-the-head heifer sales were: 61 head of Red Angus weighing 548# @ $650; 18 head Red Angus weighing 543# @ $630, and 52 Black Angus weighing 585# @ $585 per head. Last week there were 30 head of stand-out Black Angus heifers that weighed 665# and brought $107.50 per cwt. This dollared out to $715 per head. That is why I bought the nice "untopped" 581 pound black heifers for just under $550 per head. They looked like a bargain.

never posted on here before but if anybody is looking for some red angus replacements i have a load, around 80 head, they are a little light due to dry and hoppers but will make great cows.

Soap,

Are you ear notching for Bvd PI's. Aren't you worried about why those cows are getting bred up late and still keeping them around? With bringing new stock on the farm I'd really be concerned with BVD and neospora. They can just rob you blind if you don't keep up on them.
