mytwocentsworth, perhaps I didn't give your being somewhat new to ranchers.net enough consideration in that when I stated I AM NCBA. What I meant is that ALL dues paying members ARE NCBA. Very possibly that is the MOST member driven cattle producer organization in the country. No wonder it grates on us when some claim packers run it. Sure, we do allow packers to be members, but they don't dominate and certainly can be outvoted, IF they vote. It really doesn't make sense to refuse to speak to those to process our cattle to turn them into beef, does it? Just as some old auction market owners used to demonize the feeders who were BUYING our calves, it makes NO sense to demonize either packers or further processors OR retailers. Working with them has made cattle and beef businesses better for all of us.
Really, I don't discount all other organizations, and in fact, am a member of Farm Bureau. I certainly don't consider those with "opposing views" as the enemy, until they ACT as an enemy in using questionnable methods to cut down either the Beef Checkoff (which would not exist had not NCBA and many state groups and Farm bureau worked to gain the vote of fellow cattle producers to bring it about.
First, you choose the word "misappropriated" for errors in accounting. Why is that? Do you have any knowledge of the systems involved? It is very complicated and sometimes staffers do not get entries coded correctly. Sometimes there is disagreement over which expenses are allowed.
The reason for frequent in house audits is to correct these things. Backtracking a bit, did you know that there is separation between money spent by the Federation of State Beef Council division of NCBA and the Dues/Policy Division of NCBA? They are NOT one and the same.
Further, some of the staff of NCBA work for BOTH divisions, and account for their time in 15 minute increments to assure payment is properly separated between checkoff contracts and Dues/Policy division? Also, did you know that those contracts are on a cost recovery only basis? Another important point is that there have been times when NCBA was the group which was short changed and the CBB had to reimburse THEM. Never any headlines about that, though!
Are you aware that projects start with state Beef Councils, and go through the CBB before some are chosen to be awarded to one of the eight or more contractors?
Our of curiousity, where do most of you get your information about the Beef Checkoff?
