AMEN- cswilson--- Its apparent that some of these posters have never seen what a good cattleman can do from a horse- and have no idea to the vast expanse and isolation of some areas of this world... This week I moved cows out of an 8 section pasture that has 400-500 cattle running in it owned by at least 4 owners-- identified by the brand- hard to get a microchip reader to work off a horse at 1/4 mile in that big an area..One horse, 2 dogs I gathered mine out (I had 40 pairs in that pasture) with little disruption to anyone elses cattle- next day trailed 10 miles home ... One of the pastures I trailed thru is 16 sections- tough to install microchip readers to sort out cows if they get mixed when there ain't even corrals...

It sounds like some of you want to be like socialist Europe- Own 10 cows on a fenced in 40 acres and get paid a monthly salary to pamper your pets....

But I suppose some of you will chastise me for trailing the cows home, instead of hauling them in a padded bull hauler- or for making my horse and dogs work for their living...

There is still not a PERMANENT ID available that can take the place of hot iron brands for pasture identification....
I agree with your comments above Oldtimer though I notice you added "for pasture identification" and left out traceback. Finally seeing that brands and manifests aren't adequate for an MID system?

The comment about "socialist Europe" is laughable though when you consider the fear mongering and lies R-Calf uses while trying to force the US gov't to close borders to other countries. Who is the real socialist? US agriculture is the second highest in the world in subsidies behind Europe and many of it's producers would wine like he77 if taken off the gov't teat and weaned of taxpayers dollars.

Bill- I'm not against mandatory ID- Like Sandhusker, I was one of the R-CALF members that voted for it-- but at the same time I don't believe it is the miracle "cure all" as some advocate...To this day I have seen nothing that will work as good as hot brands for pasture, legal, and permanent identification.....I'm sure the time will come sometime when something is developed that will be as effective and cost efficient enough to use- but until then I see hot brands as being the tool of use.....

Boys, where did anyone say that chips or other RFID was to replace hot iron brands for all uses?

My guess is that ID may not become mandatory for a while yet, and those who don't like it can ignore it and take what someone offers you for "generic" cattle.

Obviously, for some situations, those brands may come in handy for pasture ID. What do you all plan to do about conflicting brands among various states, poorly applied brands rendered unreadable, etc.?
When half a dozen different ranchers from many different states could all legally own and use the very same brand, isn't that going to cause difficulties?

Fortunately, challenges cause some people to seek and find solutions., improving their bottom line.

Unfortunately, others fight to keep the status quo and complain about being taken advantage of in one way or another.
